The Department of Biological Sciences is a leading European centre for food and biological research and education. It hosts state-of-the-art biomolecular, cellular, and bioanalytical facilities, supported by university investment and major national and international grants. The department includes:
Research disciplines include cell biology, protein chemistry, cancer, neurobiology, immunity, environmental biology, reproductive biology, equine science, food science, and microbiology.
Over the past two years, the department has secured over €8 million in competitive funding from Horizon Europe, Research Ireland, DTIF, DAFM, IRC, Enterprise Ireland, HRB, industry, and others, accompanied by high-impact publications, patents, and disclosures.
The department offers multiple undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including the new Immersive Bioscience and Biotherapeutics (iBio) degree, and holds a Bronze Athena Swan award.
