University of Copenhagen seeks to appoint an Associate Professor of Equine Internal Medicine at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences, from 1 September 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences is sub-divided into five sections and the associate professor will be employed in the Section of Large Animal Medicine and Surgery. The veterinary program provides research-based education, and the Large Animal University Hospital offers state-of-the-art facilities for research, clinical teaching, and clinical service. The section's main activities are applied clinical research within the fields of large animal diseases and welfare, as well as clinical and didactic teaching. The section also encompasses a mobile clinic and a clinical diagnostic laboratory, which provide services to the hospital, teaching and research activities. Job description

This is a full-time academic position involving the majority of time spent in clinical research and didactic and clinical teaching. To a limited extent the position may also include other duties e.g. after hours duty, where all the department's patients (horses, small and large ruminants, and pigs) are serviced. Despite the focus is on horses, the applicant may be asked to conduct clinical teaching within diseases in ruminants. The applicant must be willing to participate in the after-hours duty.

The associate professor’s responsibilities primarily consist of:

  • research, including publication/scientific communication
  • research-based teaching with associated examination duties
  • communication of research results to the public
  • peer assessment

For the post of associate professor, such duties may also include performance of research management, attraction of external funding, educational guidance and supervision of assistant professors, PhD students, and professional assessment work.

Required qualifications

  • a DVM with Danish authorization or immediate eligibility
  • a PhD degree in equine internal medicine or similar qualifications
  • clinical experience and the willingness to aim for a diplomat degree within ECEIM or ACVIM
  • experience in clinical teaching and research expertise within equine internal medicine
  • initiative, a strong motivation, and excellent scientific skills
  • good communication skills, both oral and written
  • clinical experience with hospital management of large animals
  • if Danish is not the first language, the applicant is expected to obtain sufficient Danish skills within 1-2 years

The candidate is also required to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will be able to document a high output of original scientific work at an international level within the areas of internal medicine with a primary focus on horses and to a lesser extent on ruminants. Clinical experience within large animals will also be considered.

Terms of employment

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organizations.
