New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development invites applications for an Associate Professor position in the History of Education to begin in September 2020. The appointed faculty member will be part of the Department of Applied Statistics, Social Science, and Humanities (ASH) and will also provide leadership to the program in the History of Education.  We are committed to substantially increasing the proportion of our faculty from historically underrepresented groups as we strive to create the most intellectually diverse, inclusive, and equitable institution that we can, and especially encourage candidates from historically underrepresented groups to apply. 

Position Description: The specific History of Education field of specialization is open. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work focuses on a specific sub-field of the history of education, who has a demonstrated capacity to work with both historians and educators, and whose interests are broad and span both fields and more.  The successful candidate will be expected to play a leadership role in the department’s doctoral program in the History of Education as well as be committed to deep-level curriculum revision of doctoral and master’s programs, undergraduate teaching, and cross-departmental work. The candidate will also be expected to provide cross-departmental leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration in linking the History of Education program more closely with other programs in the department, School, and University.  Candidates should have a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching. 

Responsibilities: Conduct an active program of research and publication; teach and advise students at all levels of the department’s curriculum, including master’s,  doctoral, and undergraduate courses of interest to a wide range of students; supervise student research; participate in department program development and program/department/school-level committees; and provide other service to the University.

The successful candidate should have an earned doctorate in the history of education, or a related field such as a doctorate in history with a specialization in the history of education; a demonstrated record of a nationally recognized research program, including the ability to attract research support. The successful candidate should have strong communication skills as a classroom educator, a commitment to both undergraduate and graduate teaching, and a demonstration of excellence in teaching.  Experience with university curriculum development will be a plus.
