Associate Professor of Physics

Uppsala University

Sweden

Department of Physics and Astronomy, Uppsala University
Reference number: UFV-PA 2025/2312
Application deadline: 14 November 2025

About the Position

Uppsala University invites applications for a permanent, full-time Associate Professor position in Accelerator Physics – Future Colliders within the Division for High-Energy Physics, Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Uppsala University’s tenure track system offers associate professors the opportunity to be assessed for promotion to professor. The university provides comprehensive support for academic and educational development, leadership training, and innovation and patent support.

The Experimental Collider Physics Group—one of the three pillars of the Division for High-Energy Physics, alongside Theoretical Particle Physics and Astroparticle Physics—explores the fundamental particles and forces of nature using data from the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The group’s work spans instrumentation, data collection, physics analysis, and the design and development of future colliders, including the Future Circular Collider (FCC) at CERN.

Subject Area

The successful candidate will contribute to the design and construction of CERN’s next flagship collider—potentially the FCC-ee project (energy range 91–365 GeV) or a linear e⁺e⁻ collider. Parallel research and development will focus on accelerator technology for future high-energy hadron or muon colliders, particularly high-field superconducting magnet development.

The position involves close collaboration with the FREIA Laboratory at Uppsala University, CERN, and industrial partners.

Duties

  • Conduct research, teaching, and administrative responsibilities within the Department.

  • Teach and supervise students at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.

  • Lead projects in accelerator research and development, including collaboration with international research institutes and industry partners.

  • Stay abreast of scientific and societal developments relevant to the field and university mission.

Qualifications Required

  • Ph.D. in accelerator or experimental particle physics.

  • Demonstrated research and teaching expertise relevant to the position.

  • Completed teacher training in higher education (minimum 10 weeks) or equivalent; may be completed within two years of appointment if not already fulfilled.

  • Ability to teach in Swedish or English (documented proficiency required unless special reasons apply).

  • Strong personal and professional qualities necessary for fulfilling the role.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants will be evaluated based on research and teaching expertise, weighted equally.

Research Expertise

  • Proven record of high-quality research in accelerator physics and technology development.

  • Experience with project leadership, grant acquisition, and collaboration within academia and industry.

  • Emphasis on research quality, depth and breadth, and contributions to technological innovation.

Teaching Expertise

  • Documented experience in physics education across various levels.

  • Demonstrated teaching quality and ability to connect research with teaching.

  • Capacity for curriculum development, student supervision, and engagement in higher education pedagogy.

Collaboration and Management Expertise

  • Proven ability to plan, organize, and lead collaborative research and education projects.

  • Experience fostering external partnerships, knowledge transfer, and public engagement.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and team coordination skills.

All qualifications must be documented in a manner that allows assessment of both scope and quality.

Additional Information

  • The position is permanent; a probationary period may apply.

  • Placement: Uppsala

  • Working hours: 100% (full-time)

  • Salary: Individual salary negotiated at appointment

  • Start date: As agreed

Uppsala University values work-life balance and recognizes parental leave, part-time work for care, and union activities as equivalent to work experience in the overall assessment.

Applicants must pass a security vetting process if required.
