Summary Description


The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory is seeking an Associate Research Scientist/Assistant Director of Outreach and Education. The successful candidate will manage and oversee the US Science Support Program (USSSP) Education & Outreach (E&O) program which will consist of: 1.) Raising awareness of the International Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and Earth Science; 2.) Provide support and outreach for IODP expeditions; 3.) Inspire students in STEM fields to pursue careers in science or engineering within the Earth Sciences; 4.) Empowering educators to incorporate IODP data and scientific materials into their curricula; and 5.) Increasing diversity in IODP via targeted outreach. Will also provide skilled development of these objectives and supports USSSP-PI in achieving them. Works collaboratively with USSSP personnel.


Characteristic Duties & Responsibilities include:
• Write grant proposals as PI or co-PI to fund new scientific research projects related to Education & Outreach in IODP and the Earth Sciences.
• In concert with the USSSP PI and staff, develop an updated USSSP E&O plan with linkages to the scientific objectives of IODP. This will encompass all of USSSP’s existing E&O programs as well as possibly devising new ones, including a media interface strategy.
• Assist the USSSP PI and staff in developing the E&O portion of the USSSP Annual Program Plan each year.
• Provide oversight for two Education & Outreach Officers.
• Make presentations at regular intervals to the US IODP scientific community at meetings and communicate via listserv or periodic letters.
• Coordinate USSSP’s collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History.
• Manage the implementation of the USSSP Onboard Outreach Program.
• Supervise implementation of USSSP’s social media strategy and upkeep of USSSP’s public-facing outreach website.


Minimum Degree Required
Ph.D.


Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in Earth science, with at least two years of experience in education and outreach and demonstrated management skills.


Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills required.


Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with IODP is strongly preferred.


Additional Information
The Associate Research Scientist will report to the Research Scientist (designee of USSSP Director) and will directly supervise two Education & Outreach Officers.

The Associate Research Scientist will assist the USSSP PI in monitoring and prioritizing expenditures within a budget of approximately $500,000 annually.
