DUTIES

The Associate Vice-President Academic (the “AVPA”) is a member of the Senior Academic Leadership team and reports to the Provost and Vice-President Academic (the “Provost”). The primary role of this position is to provide leadership for Directors and staff in areas of teaching and learning (CELT), curriculum quality assurance and program level accreditation processes, establish a new academic integrity office, and oversee Integrated Strategic Planning project management. They will also lead the advancement of Indigenization of curriculum and pedagogy, provide support for the scholarship of teaching and learning, and perform a wide variety of duties as assigned by the Provost. The AVPA will also represent the Office of the Provost when attending collegial governance committees and other senior administrative bodies as assigned by the Provost.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership

  • Acts as a designate on behalf of the Provost, upon request and delegation from the Provost.
  • Brings a well-developed understanding and practice of EDI and anti-racism to their engagement with others and the priorities of the Office of the Provost.
  • Assists the Provost and the academic Deans in the development of the institutional academic plan, with a focus on regional revitalization, and continuing education/work-force development/executive learning.
  • Ensures the academic integrity and quality of the university’s educational offerings through collaboration with Faculties and Schools, including those delivered online. 
  • Oversees the development, implementation, and administration of the university’s accreditation and assessment processes such as with the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and the Degree Quality Assessment Board.
  • Liaises with all major stakeholders of the Office of the Provost on a regular basis.
  • Builds and fosters productive relations and communications channels with faculty members, Deans and members of Provost’s Council.
  • Engages in evidence based/data driven planning with intra-institutional partners in Finance and Institutional Planning and Effectiveness.
  • Represents and acts on behalf of the Office of the Provost and the university with respect to faculty grievances and other collective agreement issues when required.
  • Represents the Office of the Provost with external partners and agencies.


Teaching, Learning and Innovation

  • Upholds the highest level of academic standards with a focus on student success.
  • Supports innovative and priority educational programs across all levels and the full delivery spectrum.
  • Works with all Faculties and Schools to advance flexible and open learning methods 
  • Supports Faculties with understanding and applying enrollment, recruitment, retention and other available data.
  • Leads the development of the proposed Office of Academic Integrity.
  • Works closely with the Provost to plan for the expansion of continuing education and workforce development at TRU. 


Faculty and Staff Relations

  • Actively participates in committees and task forces across TRU.
  • Plans and prioritizes human resource needs for reporting Centers and Offices, ensuring that viable departmental hiring plans are in place, with attention to recruitment of equity deserving candidates.
  • Assists in strengthening opportunities for Indigenous scholarship, study, engagement and outreach to the community.
  • Maintains an environment in which faculty and staff are able to carry out teaching, scholarship and service of the highest quality.
  • Provides support, mentorship and guidance to faculty and staff who seek to advance their careers and/or pursue promotion/tenure. 
  • Works to build and maintain trust between administration, faculty, students and other stakeholders.
  • Integrates Equity, Diversity and Inclusion principles in faculty and staff recruitment.


General Management

  • Develops and tracks performance indicators and metrics and provides the Provost with an annual performance analysis for activities related to quality assurance and accreditation, academic integrity, and teaching and learning.
  • Ensures the effective management of a balanced budget, while continuing to invest in initiatives that promote excellence in quality assurance and accreditation, academic integrity, and teaching and learning on campus and online.
  • Coordinates all planning processes for quality assurance and accreditation, academic integrity, and teaching and learning, and engages faculty and staff members in discussing and defining priorities and long-term goals.
  • Encourages a sense of vision, energy and collegiality.
  • Creates an inclusive environment for faculty and staff that promotes engagement in all aspects of their areas of responsibility. 


Relationships Within and Outside the University

  • Builds effective relationships with a broad spectrum of constituents, including senior administration, faculty members, students, alumni, community leaders, Indigenous communities, industry and professional leaders, bargaining units, educational and other key institutions regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally and with organizations in the academic academy.
  • Builds the reputation of TRU as an institution of academic excellence and institution of choice.
  • Represents TRU, and its interests, in provincial and national organizations that span the postsecondary education sector.
  • Seeks guidance and support from University Advancement and Marketing and Communications for all media enquiries.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES 

  • Tenured at Associate Professor or above.
  • Three to five years of academic leadership experience in post-secondary education. 
  • Must possess a record of achievement in teaching and scholarship, success in academic administration, and a demonstrated ability to facilitate excellence and innovation in education, scholarly activity and service.
  • Integrated knowledge and understanding of the British Columbia post-secondary quality assurance processes and policies.
  • Ensuring the integration of Indigenous ways of knowing and being into learning environments.
  • Committing to the advancement of Indigenous peoples and international students through higher education with the ability to foster and advance an academic environment welcoming of diversity and intercultural engagement.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience working within systems of collegial governance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accreditation and evaluation procedures, as well as institutional and professional body accreditation and program review practices.
  • Leading planning processes, managing resources and providing creative leadership to faculty and staff in a post-secondary setting.
  • Advancing learning and organizational excellence in a highly diverse and complex environment.
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in management.
  • Decisively leading and managing transformative change.
  • Participating in academic governance and policy/procedure development and review.
  • Experience in academic personnel administration, policies and procedures in a collective bargaining environment.
  • An understanding of TRU’s strategic foundations, values, goals and strategic priorities.
  • Demonstrated excellence in team building, conflict resolution, collaboration and collegiality.
  • Superior cross-cultural communication, analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Accountable and transparent, with the ability to inspire trust in interpersonal relationships; a reputation for integrity, sound judgment, resourcefulness and accountability.

  • Travel as needed to regional meetings to represent the Office of the Provost.
