This position is open to all UC Davis Professors of English at the rank of Associate Professor and higher

The University of California, Davis invites applications for the Gwendolyn Bridges Needham Chair in English Literature, to begin July 1, 2020. The holder of this chair will be a distinguished scholar of English whose primary research and teaching will be in the field of eighteenth-century studies and/or women's studies, both fields broadly construed as including theoretical reflection as well as literary historical scholarship. The holder of this chair must be a highly regarded literary scholar whose work is known nationally and internationally. As a recognized leader in her or his field of major specialization, the holder of this chair would be expected to take a leadership role at UC Davis in program building and institutional initiatives (seeking external grants, etc.) in the fields of eighteenth-century studies and/or women's studies as specified under “Responsibilities of the Chair” below while continuing to pursue original research in these fields resulting in funding opportunities, articles and books, as well as teaching in these fields at the undergraduate and graduate level.

The term of the chair is for five years, with the possibility of reappointment at the discretion of the Chancellor per regularly established University procedures for endowed chair/professorship appointments (APM 191, UCD 191).

These funds are to be spent consistent with the mission of the department and the responsibilities of the chair.

Responsibilities of Chair
• While engaging fully in department activities, lead efforts to promote collaborative and interdisciplinary scholarship in the area of eighteenth-century literature and/or literature by women.
• Through mentoring and teaching in both the undergraduate and graduate programs consistent with departmental teaching policies, help to make UC Davis a world class site for the study of eighteenth-century studies and/or women’s studies.
• Build programs; lead on institutional initiatives to support the activities of students and faculty colleagues engaged in the fields of eighteenth-century studies and/or women’s studies through the sponsorship and support of events and speakers, student fellowships, and research opportunities for students and faculty colleagues.
• Through such means, accelerate and transform the fields of eighteenth-century studies and/or women’s studies at UC Davis both through continuing individual scholarship and through collaborative endeavors.
