Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the  territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering & Architectural Design at invites applications for the position of a Chair of the Department. This appointment will be for a term of three years, commencing July 1, 2021 with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional three-year terms. 

The duties and responsibilities of Department Chair are laid out in detail in article 26.1.e. of the . Reporting to the Dean, the Chair will provide exemplary academic and administrative leadership, including stewardship of human and financial resources, and will work collaboratively to provide leadership for curriculum and faculty development, research and scholarly activity, while promoting and coordinating the continued evolution of the Department. As a vision leader, the Chair will promote the expansion of seminal and applied research, establish strong university-industry relationships, support fundraising activities and facilitate a collegial, interactive, and effective learning environment that brings out the best in students, faculty and staff members.

The successful candidate shall be a dynamic academic leader and educator who is a tenured faculty member or shall be eligible for tenure upon appointment and must present evidence of the following: 

  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or related field; 
  • membership in the Professional Engineers, Ontario [PEO]
  • capacity to provide effective academic and administrative leadership; 
  • excellent record of scholarly or creative activities; 
  • a proven track record of teaching excellence; 
  • highly developed communication and organizational skills and an ability and willingness in being an ambassador in promoting the Department across the University and within industry;
  • demonstrated ability for strategic planning, as well as demonstrated commitment to an interdisciplinary approach in education; 
  • demonstrated commitment to upholding the values of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly, research or creative activities; 
  • ability to mentor junior faculty; and 
  • an enthusiasm for learning and knowledge creation, and an ability to communicate effectively within and beyond the Department. 

This position falls under the jurisdiction of the Ryerson Faculty Association (RFA) ().

Department of Civil Engineering

The Department is composed currently of 22 full-time faculty and 11 support staff.  Approximately 800 undergraduate students are currently pursuing accredited Bachelor of Engineering degrees, while more than 174 students are currently enrolled in Ph.D., M.A.Sc. and M.Eng. graduate programs.  Faculty members are engaged in a wide spectrum of teaching and research activities within the fields of Construction, Environmental, Geomatics, Geotechnical, Structural and Transportation Engineering.  Faculty members typically have research funding from NSERC, and in several cases these grants are supplemented by industrial sponsorships, grants from other agencies and research contracts with government and other institutions.  Several state-of-the-art laboratories supplement extensive teaching and research activities.
