The Counseling and Wellness Center (CWC) seeks an experienced and innovative licensed mental health professional for an embedded position providing psychological services to primarily Black college students while embedded in the Multicultural and Diversity Affairs (MCDA) Department.  This position is a Clinical Assistant Professor position with the CWC serving students in The Institute of Black Culture within MCDA.  Our primary search criteria is for generalists with a strong interest in working with Black college students. Candidates should have experience working with a wide range of client problems and levels of severity especially related to Black student experiences, systemic anti-Black racism, and oppression more generally.  We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas: 1) Black psychology 2) Social justice and liberation; and/or 3) Black Queer Psychology.  

Psychological services to students will be provided using both traditional psychotherapy/counseling modalities as well as through tele-mental health services and other digital platforms. Position duties include individual and group counseling, outreach and consultation to students, staff, faculty, administrators, parents/families.  Candidates should have experience working with a wide range of client problems and levels of severity. In addition, all clinical assistant professors in our department may provide professional training and teaching to graduate students, pre-doctoral interns, and post-doctoral fellows.  

Mental health services at the University of Florida have historically held a strong importance and distinction in the campus community. The CWC is one of the oldest counseling centers in the country, established in 1931. The CWC is a vibrant, interdisciplinary, fluid, multiculturally proficient, and creative center actively engaged in the furtherance and betterment of compassionate psychological services, outreach, and training.  The CWC fosters the human development and wellbeing of our students, staff, and faculty; nurtures student success; and contributes to a safe, welcoming, and multiculturally aware campus community.  The CWC is a dynamic part of the Division of Student Affairs and is highly utilized by students and other campus constituents seeking a variety of mental health services.  Staff are cohesive, collegial, engaged, and passionate about working within a campus environment.  The CWC runs a large training program and a doctoral internship accredited by the American Psychological Association.  The CWC is a learning organization as clinical service, training, outreach, and professional development are informed by research, local data, and benchmarking with national trends and peer institutions.  The CWC identifies closely with the vision, values, and guiding principles of the Division of Student Affairs.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Clinical Assistant Professors must (1) have a doctoral degree in clinical psychology, counseling psychology or counseling from an APA or CACREP accredited doctoral program; and (2) be licensed as a mental health professional or psychologist in the state of Florida.  Employment with the University of Florida is contingent upon the results of a criminal background check.

The successful candidate will bring many of the following professional qualifications, skills, experience, and personal qualities

  • Experience working with undergraduate and graduate/professional students, faculty and staff
  • Experience in college mental health, including crisis assessment, brief intervention, confidentiality requirements, referral, and tele-mental health  
  • Experience working in settings with more severe populations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of client, students, faculty, and staff disclosures
  • Administrative and computer application skills required to effectively implement and maintain a case management and tracking system
  • Demonstrated skill in working well under pressure to prioritize and manage multiple clinical, consultation, and/or outreach situations and to coordinate these efforts as a part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of a challenging workload while maintaining positive and healthy perspectives and relationships
  • Experience working with other constituencies and partners in emergency crisis management situations
  • Able to understand and follow regulatory and ethical guidelines while providing effective consultation to other University leaders during crisis interventions
  • Collaborative spirit of warmth, kindness, acceptance, respect, honesty, and trust towards colleagues
  • Demonstrated knowledge and sensitivity related to anti-black racism, social justice, multicultural issues and proven ability to interact with diverse individuals and groups
  • Self-motivated, self-directed commitment to the highest ethical and professional ideals and standards. Personal and professional integrity above reproach
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of the current laws, procedures, and the American Psychological Association and/or American Counseling Association ethical principles that govern the practice of psychology/counseling in the State of Florida, including tele-mental health practice.
