The Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London seeks to appoint a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Urology providing an outstanding opportunity to join a world-leading team whose interdisciplinary research ranks it as one of the global premier academic departments of surgery. The post will be full-time and funded for 5 years in the first instance and will hold an honorary consultant contract with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHNT)

The Department’s overarching mission is to innovate, develop and apply new translational technologies. Utilizing approaches and models to improve medical and surgical diagnostics, clinical decision-making and patient stratification. This will better inform health policy decisions and government policy.

Research themes in the Division of Surgery, include ‘Clinical Skills, simulation and patient engagement’, Diagnostics and Sensing, Health Policy, Musculoskeletal, Patient Safety, Surgical Technology, ‘Trials, translation and service delivery’. The research groups under these sections are based at St Mary’s, Hammersmith, Charing Cross and Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals.

The Division employs scientists and academic clinicians in colorectal, oesophago-gastric, bariatric, hepatobiliary/ pancreatic, musculoskeletal, vascular, urology and breast surgery. Research in the Division of Surgery is driven by interdisciplinary work to apply science and technology to issues directly affecting patient care. Translational research is integral to the Division’s success, developed by cross-faculty collaborations with the Department of Computing, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Business School as well as with Schools, Institutes and Departments within the Faculty of Medicine.

Duties and responsibilities

You will join the team led by Professor Hashim Ahmed. The urology services are based at Charing Cross Hospitals, with occasional commitments at the Hammersmith Hospital and St Mary’s. You will be a member of a large group of WTE consultants. The urology services have undergone recent re-organisation, with the main in-patient bed base for non-electives and major open surgery at the Charing Cross campus. The urology service on the St Marys site is based in the purpose-built Surgical Innovation Centre (based in the Paterson building).

You will be encouraged to demonstrate a developing reputation in the field of research and an ability to attract funds to support it. As well as having a proven track record in publishing, education including UG teaching, PG education and supervision, you will have an outstanding reputation in the provision of clinical service.

As an academic urologist you will be well placed to perform research in diagnostics, imaging and interventional and surgical techniques. Minimally invasive and surgical robotic approaches to treat prostatic cancer is an evolving research area with imaging, AI, and precision tools as an essential component to its success.

Essential requirements

To be successful, you will:

• Be a GMC registered Medical Practitioner
• Hold GMC specialist registration (or within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC’s specialist register)
• Have appropriate Royal College Membership
• Have a Further Higher Degree (PhD or equivalent) in the relevant subject area
• Have clinical training and experience in urology, equivalent to that required for a UK CCT with the ability to perform all non-elective care with the exception of renal trauma surgery, complex iatrogenic injuries and major abdomino-pelvic surgery
• Provide a statement regarding appropriate training and experience including that relating to a special interest including prostate cancer focal therapy and robotic assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP).
