General Description

Each Department Director is responsible to the Dean for providing overall stewardship within the department to advance the education, research and clinical missions.

The Director is expected to serve as a role model for the department by demonstrating institutional citizenship through participation in leadership meetings and in committee activities of the department, the medical school, the University, and the profession at large. The Director is responsible for promoting a positive workplace environment that supports teamwork, respect and collegiality among all departmental faculty and staff. The Director is expected to promote diversity, equity and inclusion throughout the department activities.

The Director sets the tone for the department and promotes the vision and mission of Johns Hopkins Medicine, as articulated by the Dean and health system leadership. The Director is expected to collaborate with appropriate administrative and clinical leadership to achieve departmental goals and articulate a vision for growth. The Director is responsible for the development and oversight of departmental strategic planning to ensure growth and enhancement of clinical, research, and teaching activities.

The Director is responsible for all aspects of departmental administration, including space, finances, support and mentoring of faculty and trainees, clinical, research and educational activities. The Director is responsible for maintaining appropriate standards of care applicable to the discipline, ensuring the highest levels of patient quality and safety, and promoting a culture of clinical excellence in all practice settings. The Director is responsible for fostering research creativity and productivity within the Department, with the expectations of strengthening the departmental research base and impact.  The Director is expected to promote a departmental culture which values education, scientific discovery and clinical innovation.   
Qualifications

The Chair of Neurosurgery must hold an MD, MD-PhD, DO, or equivalent medical degree and be board-certified in Neurosurgery or a Neurosurgery subspecialty.  The candidate must have demonstrated expertise appropriate for appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  The candidate must have at least five years of administrative and leadership experience in an academic institution, be eligible for licensure in Maryland, and be eligible to work in the United States.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
