Doctoral Candidate Position in Optics and Photonics

We are looking for a doctoral candidate to join our group for experimental and theoretical research on light-matter interaction at the nanoscale. The candidate will develop novel approaches to the creation of nanostructured light sources, modulators, waveguides and other nano- and microstructured components that can be used in future nanophotonic devices. Preference will be given to candidates with good understanding of basic optics and photonics and experience in designing and conducting optical experiments.


  • MSc. in physics
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English
  • Good understanding of basic optics
  • Experience in experimental physics and numerical simulations
  • Strong motivations to learn new skills, solve new problems and develop new scientific methods

Duration and Salary

The successful candidate should start in summer or autumn 2019. The position is fixed-term. The doctoral candidate will first be granted a two-year contract, followed by an extension for another two-year period after intermediate evaluation.

The annual total workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1624 hours. The position will be located at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus. The expected starting salary for a PhD candidate is approx. 2400 €/month and follows the university salary system. The contract includes Aalto University occupational health care.
