The research group First line and Interdisciplinary care within the department Family Medicine and Population Health of the Faculty of Medicine and health sciences has the following full-time vacancy: a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of medicine and health care.

Position

  • You work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis on the scope of the "Shared and informed decision-making in general practice in a culturally diverse context." This concept is applied to the preferences of patients with a migrant background regarding communication (e.g., preference for limited communication of stressful information or for communication directly to family members) and medical decision-making (e.g., preference for family-centered decision-making). The primary goal is to improve diversity-sensitive, patient-centered care by examining existing strategies and adapting them to patient preferences and legal options.
  • You will collect and analyze qualitative data on how general practitioners experience medical decision-making together with people of migrant background and what strategies they use in doing so.
  • You will work closely with the two fellowship students who focus on the patient perspective and the legal framework, respectively.
  • You will undertake a limited set of teaching and research support tasks for the research group.

Profile

  • You earned a master's degree in medicine, health sciences or another relevant discipline, or you will obtain the degree no later than the time of appointment. The is s conditions of admissibility.
  • You have a special interest in scientific research in the field of primary care medicine
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity, and cooperation.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is 1 September 2023 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for contract research staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will do most of your work at the City Campus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
