Bringing organ-on-chip technology to Ophthalmology: the development of a cornea-on-chip

The Antwerp Research Group for Ocular Science (ARGOS) is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated PhD-candidate to join their team. We focus on tissue engineering and translational medicine of the human cornea through a multidisciplinary approach. Your research will focus on the development of a cornea-on-a-chip through a combination of corneal cell biology and materials development.

Job description

  • You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of corneal cell biology and organ-on-chip technology.
  • You publish scientific articles related to the research project of the assignment.
  • You contribute to teaching and research in Translational Neurosciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Antwerp Research Group for Ocular Science (ARGOS).

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a master degree, from an European university, in biomedical sciences, biochemistry, medicine, pharmacy or a closely related discipline.
  • The degree must be obtained no earlier than 2017.
  • You are willing to apply for a personal FWO PhD fellowship.
  • You can submit outstanding academic results.
  • Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.
  • Foreign candidates are encouraged to apply.
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.
  • Prior experience in cell culture is a plus.
  • English speaking and writing skills are required.

We offer

  • a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further two-year period after positive evaluation;
  • the start date of the scholarship will be between May 1st 2020 and October 1st 2020;
  • a monthly grant ranging from € 2.447,20 to € 2.596,27 according to the standard Flemish bursary levels for PhD students;
  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
