The Centre for Health Economics Research and Modelling Infectious Diseases (CHERMID) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is looking in collaboration with the Multiple Sclerosis and Rare Neuroinflammatory Diseases unit within the Neurology Department at the Antwerp University Hospital for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis on the effects of metformin in slowing down disease progression in progressive Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This PhD project is embedded in an ongoing multicentre, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial on the neuroprotective and remyelinating effects of metformin in MS patients. You will contribute to the collection of high-quality brain MRI data and perform the longitudinal data analysis on MRI Volumetry, Diffusion Tensor Imaging and iron-rim lesions. In addition, you will advance the data collection on health-related quality of life and the use of healthcare resources and costs for all patients within the clinical trial. You will be supported for the MRI data analyses and health economic evaluation by the promotors and partners within the project consortium.
  • You will closely collaborate with other researchers with complementary skills.
  • You will report study results in writing and orally in the national and international scientific community and will contribute to the writing of project reports and grant proposals.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Statistics, Data Sciences, Engineering or Biomedical Sciences.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • You have very good scientific writing skills.
  • You have experience in data analysis and statistical software
  • You have (thorough) knowledge of R, Matlab, STATA, SAS or Python, or you are interested to learn scientific programming.
  • Experience with MRI data analysis is a plus
  • Experience with health economic evaluations is a plus.
  • You have good communicative skills, and you have an open mindset to engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
  • You have good organizational and planning skills
  • You have thorough knowledge of English, both oral and written.
  • Mastering Dutch is an additional asset
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is 1st of September 2022.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • You will work in a dynamic and stimulating working environment within the research group CHERMID on Campus Drie Eiken and the Neurology Department from the Antwerp University Hospital. Collaborations and discussions with members of the Translational Neurosciences Department within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences will be facilitated.
