The Department of Chemistry, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science is currently seeking for

Doctoral student in computational chemistry, beginning March1, 2020 or as agreed, the maximum length of the employment contract is four years.

Department of chemistry is known for high-level research and teaching ( and in the latest academic ranking of world universities, it was ranked between 210 – 300. Computational chemistry is one of the focus areas of the department and the doctoral student will be working in the group of Prof. Karoliina Honkala in the project focusing on the conversion of carbon dioxideto fuels with tailored heterogeneous catalysts funded by Academy of Finland. The tasks of the doctoral student focus on research concerning doctoral thesis, doctoral studies, assisting teaching tasks, and other tasks related to these. The doctoral student will work in a close collaboration with the experimental group and employ density functional theory calculations and kinetic simulations to address carbon dioxide conversion to methanol over well-defined heterogeneous catalysts. The goal is to understand how different factors such as a chemical composition and structure of a catalyst influence the activity and selectivity of a catalyst.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of Doctoral student are in accordance with the University of Jyväskylä Regulations. The selected person must also fulfill language requirements set for the selection of PhD students. Different options to fulfill these requirements will be communicated to the selected persons.

The eligible candidate for the doctoral student position should have, or be about to obtain, a suitable degree and background in natural sciences. In addition, the doctoral student must have a permission for post-graduate studies at the University of Jyväskylä. If the applicant does not have permission for post-graduate studies, it must be applied with a separate application procedure from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science after selection for the position. Previous experience on catalysis and/or computational chemistry/physics, in particular, density functional theory calculations is considered as an advantage.

The initial salary of a doctoral student is approximately 2100 € / month. As the dissertation work progresses, the salary will be revised in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System.
