Duties and Responsibilities

The EPSRC-funded Future Targeted Healthcare Manufacturing Hub is an international programme hosted by the Advanced Centre for Biochemical Engineering (ACBE) at UCL with funding from the EPSRC and a user consortium. The Hub has collaborative Spokes at Imperial College London and the Universities of Loughborough, Manchester, Nottingham and Warwick. The Hub network of international companies and universities brings together process engineers, life scientists, pharmacists, mechanical engineers, public policy scientists and health economists. The Hub focuses on research questions focusing on creating innovative manufacturing and formulation routes, analytical and process control methods, and associated computational decision-support frameworks, to revolutionise the delivery of cost-effective stratified protein-based and personalised cell-based therapies to patients.

We are seeking to recruit a proactive, collaborative, dedicated, well organised, highly motivated, and driven Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the Advanced Therapy Bioprocessing Group and lead the T-cell immunotherapy development, with a specific focus on gene delivery. The Research Fellow, under the supervision of Dr Qasim Rafiq, will be responsible for developing gene delivery platforms for T-cell immunotherapy applications and identifying novel and innovative ways of redefining these processes for a personalised manufacturing paradigm. This will include understanding the biology of viral vectors, human immunology as well as simplifying and optimising the isolation of T-cells in addition to their upstream/downstream processing, characterisation and cell analysis.

While the Hub is funded for seven years in total, the position will be offered until 31st December 2021 in the first instance, and extended as required on a yearly basis. The post is available from 1 February 2020.

Key Requirements

To succeed in this role you will need to have a PhD awarded (or about to be) in a relevant subject. This may include biological sciences, cell biology or immunology disciplines, biotechnology or biochemical engineering with relevance to gene delivery for T-cell applications, and an interest in developing an understanding of how to control T-cell fate in novel platform technologies. 

You will need to be able to use creative problem-solving skills to independently design experiments and troubleshoot experimental challenges as well as to perform studies accurately and reproducibly, accomplish project objectives, and meet or exceed expectations while effectively contributing to the team.
