Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada,Ryerson University, is on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, theDepartment of Geography & Environmental Studies in theFaculty of Arts  and the interdisciplinary  Environmental Applied Science and Management graduate program at invite applications for a cross-appointment tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2021, subject to final budgetary approval.

We are seeking applications from candidates who specialize in environment-focused Geospatial Data Science, Geographic Information Science (GIScience), Geocomputation, and/or Remote Sensing. Potential areas of focus or application include, but are not limited to, socio-ecological systems and/or landscape change, climatology or atmospheric science, hydrology, soil science, and/or related environmental health effects.  Advanced use of spatial modeling, AI and neural nets, machine learning, geospatial statistics, and/or hyperspectral, LiDAR, and/or drone data is of particular interest, especially in an urban context. Successful candidates will be cross-appointed to the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies in the Faculty of Arts and the Environmental Applied Science and Management graduate program, Yeates School of Graduate Studies.

The successful candidate will:  engage in a combination of teaching, research and service duties, and will contribute to problem-solving and collaboration with existing and new research partners on campus and in the community;  split teaching responsibilities with the Environmental Applied Science and Management graduate program and Department of Geography and Environmental Studies undergraduate programs Geographic Analysis and Environment and Urban Sustainability; have an opportunity to teach and supervise graduate students in the Master of Spatial Analysis (MSA) program; and be expected to take an active role in bringing innovation and creativity to the development of our undergraduate and graduate programs.

Candidates must have a PhD in Environmental Studies or Sciences, Geography, or a closely-related field. Exceptionally qualified candidates who are all-but-dissertation (ABD) and are very close to completion of their PhD in the required areas may also be considered. In addition, candidates must present evidence of:

  • a strong research and/or knowledge mobilization and translation profile with evidence of an emerging scholarly record and the potential to establish and maintain an independent, externally-funded research program;
  • the capacity for effective teaching and student training;
  • the capacity for developing and maintaining partnerships with academic and local communities;
  • a strong commitment to our values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
  • an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the Department, Faculty and the University through collegial service.

Department of Geography and Environmental Studies

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies has undergone significant growth and diversification in recent years, building on its long-standing reputation for spatial analysis and practical applications. The Department offers two undergraduate programs – BA Honours in Environment and Urban Sustainability, and Geographic Analysis – and one graduate program – Master of Spatial Analysis. Our Department also offers high-enrolment liberal studies and elective courses to non-program students.

Environmental Applied Science and Management Program

The Environmental Applied Science and Management graduate program offers a PhD and a Master's degree in a multidisciplinary program for graduate students seeking advanced study in a professionally-based environmental program.  This multidisciplinary program provides research opportunities in a broad variety of environmental fields including biology, chemistry, ecology, engineering, geography, geology, public and occupational health, urban planning and environmental studies.
