Position Summary


The School of Social Work (SSW) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites nominations and applications for one non-tenure track, open rank, full-time faculty position. The mission of the School of Social Work is to advance equity, transform systems, and improve lives. The School’s curriculum supports this mission and includes a focus on innovation and evidence-informed education, engaged scholarship, and engaged community service. It does so to heighten social impact as it benefits marginalized and vulnerable citizens and families and communities. This clinical faculty position is a 12-month (1.0 FTE) appointment beginning March 1, 2020 or shortly thereafter. Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience.


We are seeking applicants with experience in social innovation, social entrepreneurship, financial management and macro system design, community and system change methods. We seek individuals who are committed to engaged education, consultation and participatory learning designs to heighten social impact for vulnerable populations. The individual will in addition to teaching in the School’s macro social work curriculum contribute to the strategic direction, development and management of innovative community education and consultation services and social enterprise start-ups associated with the mission of the School and its Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab (SIEL). The faculty member will assist the School’s Director of Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the engagement of students within the School itself and related fields in the university in support of collaborative, participatory learning in the emerging field of social innovation.


The School of Social Work offers M.S.W. and Ph.D. degrees. Dual degrees are offered with Law, Public Health, Public Administration, and Divinity (with Duke University). The faculty members of the School of Social Work have strong collaborative relationships with many campus units such as the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, Law, Government, Education, and the Department of City and Regional Planning as well as University Centers and Institutes such as the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, the Carolina Population Center, the Center for Developmental Sciences, Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, and the Institute on Aging. Educational Requirements
Applicants must possess a master’s degree in social work or a related field with two years post-master’s experience in social innovation and entrepreneurship, community engagement, systems change and teaching. Candidates with a doctoral degree in social work or a related field are also encouraged to apply.


Qualifications and Experience
Applicant will have demonstrated knowledge and skills associated with social innovation and entrepreneurship; experience in teaching, applied learning, training and consultation; and community engagement experience in the design of social change methods which inform their teaching of related courses within the School’s Community, Management and Policy Practice concentration. Interest and previous experience in teaching graduate level courses is preferred. In addition to duties described in the preceding paragraphs, the individual will participate in relevant committee work. This position will teach up to two courses per academic year, typically one course each in the fall and spring semesters.
