Faculty Position in Media, Journalistic and Cultural Industries in a Changing Landscape

As part of a major expansion in its programs, the Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor specializing in Media, Journalistic and Cultural Industries in a Changing Landscape. Building and expanding on our strengths in this area, this position explores the ways in which the media, journalistic and cultural industries are evolving to adapt to a global environment within which social and mobile media have become central. The successful candidate’s research profile will engage with the ways in which people access, produce and monetize content (news, information, entertainment) and the implications for policy and regulation in Canada. Position expected to start January 1, 2021.

Title of the position: Assistant Professor level, but higher ranks will be considered under exceptional circumstances. 

Duties: The functions of a member of the academic staff include, in varying proportions: a) teaching activities; b) scholarly activities revealed by research; c) academic service activities, d) supervision of graduate students.

  • The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in media communication, journalism and/or cultural industries. A critical aspect of these expectations will be the provision of teaching and mentoring to trainees at the University.
  • The candidate will be expected to implement a research program in communication that will lead to scholarly publications and which has the potential of attracting, developing, and retaining excellent trainees, students, and future researchers in addition to external funding, to supervise these trainees in writing theses and research papers.
  • A strong commitment to participate in the administrative activities of the department is required.

Terms: Tenure-track position

Wage:  Salary scale for an Assistant Professor will start at $ 86,986 (as of May 1, 2020).

Skills requirements:

Education: Ph.D. in Communication or in a closely related field will be required by the start date. 

Work experience: 

  • Candidates must have an excellent record of research and peer-reviewed publications in the field of communication.
  • Relevant areas of expertise may include, but are not limited to: technological disruption from AI-driven automation, digital data, and new visual and voice-based interfaces; the role of news and media in Canadian culture, democracy, and identity; transnational media and cultural industries; issues around ethics, trust, monetization, regulation, information and disinformation in a high-choice media environment; Indigenous media; digital media and journalism entrepreneurship; political economy of the media and/or cultural industries.
  • Active knowledge of French and English will be required at time of hire in order to function in our bilingual environment.  
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching in communication or a related discipline is required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Experience attracting and supervising graduate students is an asset.
