We, the Hochschule Darmstadt – University of Applied Sciences (h_da), are one of the
five largest universities of applied sciences in Germany, located in the heart of the RhineMain-Neckar metropolitan region. More than 15,000 students study at bachelor's, master's
and doctoral level in 12 faculties. We offer a large range of disciplines integrating inter- and

The Hessian Centre for Artificial Intelligence (hessian.AI), which is supported by 13 Hessian
universities of different types, combines the existing strengths in Hessian AI research. Hochschule Darmstadt is a founding member of hessian.AI. The goal of hessian.AI is to provide
excellent research with practical relevance for answers to important challenges of our time
combined with the transfer to the economy and society. The state of Hesse is providing 38
million euros for the five-year start-up phase and is establishing additional professorships
such as the one advertised here.
Prerequisites:
• Profound knowledge and practical experience in the field of AI – preferably related
to smart cities – for example in the following areas and application domains:
- Machine learning, e.g. for energy optimisation
- Data mining, e.g. for learning from the data sets of citizens and offices
- Knowledge-based AI, e.g. Knowledge Graphs for citizen services
- Natural Language Processing, e.g. for social media analysis
- Computer Vision, e.g. for analysing satellite images
- Smart Mobility, e.g. for autonomous driving, traffic flow and parking space
optimisation
- Time Series Forecasting / Anomaly Detection, e.g. for energy consumption
forecasting
• Research experience, to be shown in a personal research profile with relevant
publications as well as activities envisaged in the case of appointment
• Fluent in English (comparable to C1 level, to be proven in the context of the
appointment lecture) and at least basic German skills (comparable to A2 level, to
be proven in the context of the interview)
• Gender and diversity competence.

Duties:
• Active participation in the research bodies of Hochschule Darmstadt (e.g. Research Centre for Applied Computer Science), as well as supervision of doctoral
students. Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences has the authority to award
doctorates via the inter-university Doctoral Centre for Applied Computer Science.
• Implementation of research and/or practical projects as well as acquisition and
implementation of projects funded by third parties.
• Active collaboration in research activities of hessian.AI, as well as in the centre's
own teaching, further education and transfer formats.
• Transfer of research results in cooperation with regional partners such as Digitalstadt Darmstadt and the start-up centres HUB31 and TechQuartier.
• Taking on courses in the various programmes of the Computer Science department as well as hessian.AI in the form of classroom and online teaching formats,
also in English. If necessary, courses in computer science foundations are also to
be offered at other university departments.
Also expected:
• Continuing education in university didactics.
• Professional cooperation in the university network „European University of
Technology + (EUt+)", of which Hochschule Darmstadt is a member.
• Active participation in the self-administration of the department and the university.

The duties, the requirements for appointment and the modalities of appointment for a
professorship result from §§ 67 and 68 as well as 75 and 76 of the Hessian Higher
Education Act.
