Full Professor of Dynamic Molecular Materials

Radboud University Faculty of Science

Netherlands

Full Professor (Chair) of Dynamic Molecular Materials

  • 32 - 40 hours per week
  • Maximum gross monthly salary: € 8,371
  • Faculty of Science
  • Required background: PhD
  • Duration of the contract: Indefinite period
  • Application deadline: 15 November 2020

We are looking for

You will be responsible for leading an independent research group, which includes establishing and maintaining an internationally competitive research programme that fits on with IMM's research, acquisition of research funding, possibly in collaboration with external academic and/or industrial partners, and supervision and guidance of PhD candidates and scientific staff. Your teaching activities will be part of the Education Institute for Molecular Sciences (which is responsible for the Bachelor's degree programmes in Chemistry, Molecular Life Sciences and Science, and the Master's degree programme in Molecular Sciences) with a focus on teaching in Materials Science and/or Inorganic Chemistry.

We ask

IMM wishes to further build upon its world-leading research in the area of complex molecular systems and to expand its activities towards molecular materials science. Topics might include studying self-organisation in organic/inorganic or biologically inspired systems and modulating their function and properties, adaptive out-of-equilibrium systems and materials, or the design of organic/inorganic materials and interfaces with dynamic properties. A wider focus could also underpin teaching in materials chemistry and organic/inorganic chemistry. The ideal candidate for this position is a physical chemist or soft matter scientist who has a PhD degree in chemistry or physics and aims to design, create and understand dynamic complex molecular systems.

We are therefore looking for:
  • An enthusiastic and entrepreneurial scientist with an excellent track record and the potential to conduct research in the field of dynamic organic/inorganic molecular materials and to initiate a novel, internationally recognised research area within IMM.
  • A researcher who is willing to participate in projects of a multidisciplinary nature and who is willing to cooperate and represent our institute in national and international research organisations and networks.
  • An inspirational lecturer with proven teaching skills and experience with modern ways of conveying knowledge.
  • An academic with proven managerial and organisational experience who will contribute to the administrative and organisational tasks of the Faculty of Science, the IMM research institute, and the study programmes they offer.

We are

The Faculty of Science is a complete, student-oriented science faculty where research and education are closely intertwined. The faculty aims to form an academic community with an international character, where staff members from different backgrounds can combine their talents with the common goal of belonging to the leading science faculties in Europe.

You will be appointed as a Full Professor at the Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM). IMM is a research institute in chemistry and physics, which fosters interdisciplinary research. Its mission is to design and create functional molecules and materials to fundamentally understand their behaviour. IMM comprises 19 research groups active in areas ranging from condensed matter science to organic chemistry and chemical biology. We focus on fundamental research with an open eye for societal applications and educate the next generation of leaders in science and innovation. IMM distinguishes itself from similar institutes by intensive collaborations and interactions between chemists and physicists and between experimentalists and theorists. IMM has a strong infrastructure including large user facilities such as the High Field Magnet Laboratory (HFML), the Free Electron Laser facility FELIX and part of the uNMR-NL facilities. One of the central research themes of IMM is Complex Molecular Systems, which entails the design, synthesis and analysis of molecular systems that exhibit emerging properties when operating under out-of-equilibrium conditions. This new direction in chemistry involves systems that exhibit dynamic properties that only emerge through the myriad of interactions between their different components. At large length scales, complex molecular systems in our atmosphere may shape the climate, while at small length scales, they may determine whether bacteria survive. Complex molecular systems are of fundamental importance for understanding the origins of life and for the development of new paradigms in life-like materials, as well as in molecular information processing.
