Full-Time Lecturer in Goat/Sheep Production

Position Description:

FULL TIME 12-MONTH LECTURER IN GOAT/SHEEP PRODUCTION. The Animal Science Department within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at Cal Poly State University is seeking a full-time, 12-month lecturer for the 2019-20 year beginning August 30, 2019 through August 31, 2020. The position involves teaching courses in goat and sheep science, introduction to animal science, goat and sheep management, and disciplines appropriate to the expertise of the individual and needs of the department. 

The successful candidate will establish an active relationship with other university faculty and researchers; leaders in in livestock industry, students, and the general public to provide information and leadership related to small ruminant production issues. In addition, candidate should be able to provide practical experience and individualized student-learning opportunities such as experiential classes, undergraduate and graduate research projects and student internships. 

Duties may also include, but are not limited to, supervising the Cal Poly Sheep Center and Goat Herd and student employees. 

Service activities will include participation on department, college, and university committees and instructionally related activities. 

 

Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills:

Qualifications include a B.S. degree in Animal Science or related discipline, with understanding of current technology in small ruminant animal production, nutrition, biology and physiology. 

Other considerations include demonstration of excellence in teaching, and effective communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to be a productive team player and effectively interact with students, faculty and staff, animal industries, government agencies, and the general public are critical.

Preferred Qualifications / Skills:

Preference will be given to candidates with any of the following: an M.S. degree in Animal Science; teaching and production experience, experience in sheep and goat production, or previous teaching experience in small ruminant production. 

Candidates who have international experience or the desire to cultivate international links are preferred.

The Animal Sciences Department, includes over 800 students in the two majors, boasts the most comprehensive and the best undergraduate program in livestock production and management in the West. Through its faculty and students, the Department manages commercial herds and flocks of dairy and beef cattle, horses, sheep, swine, and poultry on a farm of some 6,000 acres with the support of several new facilities including a new state of the art, $6.5 million meat processing center and $6 million animal nutrition center. Recent gifts in excess of $10 million have been given to the Department to enhance these living laboratories where our students gain hands-on experience on our production units. Graduates of Animal Science and Dairy Science are prepared for meaningful careers in the animal industries, allied professions, and graduate studies.
