Yonge Developmental Research School (DRS) is a public school established in 1934 with the mission to design, test, and disseminate innovations in K-12 education through serving a student population representative of Florida’s economic, racial, gender, and academic diversity. The Opportunity and Job Description

P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School (DRS) is seeking to hire an experienced 6th-12th Grade Choral & Performing Arts Instructor.  P.K. Yonge’s 6th-12th Grade Performing Arts Program includes both audition-based and open-enrollment courses as follows:  chorus, drama, show choir, band, jazz band, and instrumental ensemble.  The ideal candidate would have chorus teaching and musical theater/performance choir experience with 6-12 students from diverse backgrounds, including experience as a director/producer.  The 6th-12th Choral and Performing Arts Instructor will be responsible for the artistic integrity and quality of assigned performance groups, as well as directing and producing choral concerts and productions.  Specific responsibilities and expectations for contributing to the P.K. Yonge Performing Arts Program are as follows:

  • Direct teaching of assigned students. 
  • Administer and analyze formative assessments to monitor student progress and plan instructional shifts to increase achievement and success for all students.
  • Design appropriate curriculum, instructional, and assessment accommodations to support academic success for a diverse group of students including both striving and advanced learners. 
  • Incorporate effective and innovative uses of technology to support teaching, learning, and collaboration in a 1:1 learning environment.
  • Maintain regular parent communication (virtually, face-to-face).
  • Engage in annual cycles of professional learning. 
  • Participate in practitioner inquiry (research) to support professional learning and inform continuous program improvement.
  • Analyze the impact of teaching practice and implemented curriculum on student learning.
  • Select developmentally appropriate, yet challenging, music and materials for assigned courses and annual concerts/productions
  • Program and prepare students for competitions, extracurricular, and/or community performances
  • Lead and supervise rehearsals for special programs
  • Assume responsibility, plan (i.e., registration, transportation, lodging, meals, chaperones), and accompany students to school-sponsored performances and competitions; monitor and manage student behavior
  • Communicate effectively with administrators, parents, and teaching colleagues regarding scheduling, rehearsals, upcoming performances, and students’ academic progress
  • Manage assignment and care of performance costumes, props, and equipment in the performing arts facility

The successful candidate should possess the following skills and qualifications:

Minimum Requirements

  1. A Master’s degree; candidates with Bachelor’s degree will be considered, but will be required to obtain a Master’s degree within three years of hire; See UF’s Employee Education tuition benefit
  2. Florida teaching certification (or Certificate of Eligibility)
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills
  4. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and effective strategies for motivating and teaching students with differing skill levels from a variety of backgrounds

Preferred Qualification

           3+ years of K-12 choral teaching experience
