The University of Helsinki Faculty of Arts is Finland’s oldest and largest unit of teaching and research in the arts in terms of the organisation and selection of its disciplines. The Faculty is also a significant international community of research, education and culture.

The Department of Cultures, Faculty of Arts, invites applications for the position of

University Instructor

for a fixed term from 1 August 2020 to 31 July 2023 (locum tenens). The field of the position is archaeology.

The primary duties of the university instructor are to teach bachelor’s and master’s level courses focused on field work and documentation methods. The courses include both lecture-based and small group teaching, and some of the teaching takes place in the field (courses involving teaching excavations, archaeological surveys and excavation projects). The appointee’s duties also include the organisation of excavations and post-excavation work, the management of related licences, and participation in various field projects in Finland and abroad. The duties include no independent research work.

An appointee to the position of university instructor must hold a second-cycle (master’s) degree in archaeology and have good teaching skills. He or she must also be able to use traditional methods of field work and the most common technical documentation tools (tachymeter, RTK-GPS, GPS, digital photography). The appointee is expected to contribute to the development of teaching and research together with other staff as well as to student guidance and supervision. Other duties relate to communication, preparation and administration as well as those pertaining to the development and maintenance of research infrastructure that more broadly serves the Faculty.

To successfully complete the duties of the position, the appointee must have extensive experience in archaeological field work, good general IT skills (Microsoft Office, Adobe CS, GIS software), good interaction skills and good proficiency in Finnish and English, and must be well organised and meticulous. Particular consideration will be given to all specialist skills related to archaeological documentation and prospection (e.g., photogrammetry, laser scanning, 3D modelling, geophysical methods, and experience in the use of a metal detector, 3D printing or a drone), knowledge of the environment of archaeology and/or the humanities, as well as publications and other scientific merits.

When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention will be paid to extensive competence in the field described, pedagogical training, and the ability to produce learning material and provide a wide range of teaching. The appointee must have at least a class B driving licence.

According to the Government Decree on Universities, university instructors are required to be proficient in Finnish. They must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application.

The salary will be based on levels 4–5 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. Annual workload provisions issued in the general collective agreement for universities apply to the position. There is a six-month trial period.
