Course Description:  This course seeks to build a spirit of inquiry, learning, and reflection on the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that comprise and define effective middle and secondary classroom teaching.  Teaching is both an art and an inexact science, and there are many paths to successful teaching practice.  Success in the classroom requires that emerging teachers develop an extensive repertoire of methods for getting to know and understanding students while effectively engaging them in content that is rich, vivid, culturally relevant, and reflective of the current state of the field or discipline.  As content varies, so too do the tools for teaching it; likewise, as individual students vary in their strengths, challenges, cultural locations, and learning styles, so too must the tools be varied in order to meet differing assets and needs.  The foundation of all teaching is the relationship between student and teacher; ultimately, effective pedagogy begins and ends with seeing and knowing each learner as an individual.

A full syllabus for the course is available here.  This course is entirely written and planned, all readings are available electronically, all lesson plans (including slides) are fully prepared, and all assessments and other materials are uploaded and integrated into NYU Brightspace Learning Management System (LMS).


Qualifications:  An advanced degree in English Education or Social Studies Education, as well as proficiency in the other area of study and teaching.  At least five years of teaching experience, preferably in New York City.  Comfort working with and supporting novice teachers, including graduate and undergraduate students who are teaching for the first time.  Must be fully comfortable with teaching and working with emerging teachers using Backwards Design approaches, Culturally Sustaining Curriculum theory and practice, Restorative Justice approaches, Universal Design for Learning principles, and Differentiated Instruction techniques.

Must be fully vaccinated and/or able to submit to rigorous exemption/screening methods as required by NYU.
