The School of Medicine and Health Sciences (VI) of the University of Oldenburg is inviting applications for a

Junior Professor (m/f/x) in Big Data in Medicine
(Salary grade W1, tenure track)

that is to be filled as soon as possible in the Department of Health Services Research. The position is funded by the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States supporting junior scientists / early career researchers.

Health services research is one of the main research foci of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, which is currently being expanded. The nine research divisions of the Department of Health Services Research offer a unique environment for the further academic development of this young research field. The increased use of digital technologies in medicine and in nursing are hereby of particular importance. The integration and analysis of heterogeneous data from inpatient and outpatient care, administrative processes and personal lifestyle (e.g. activity monitoring) plays an increasingly important role in this context.

We are looking for a candidate who has published on questions pertaining to big data in the medical field and health care in national and international peer-reviewed journals. A high level of methodological expertise in the field of data and information science is thus required. Initial teaching experience and participation in the acquisition of third-party funding are also expected. Experience with international research cooperations and project management is desirable.

In terms of research, the professorship is to strengthen the departmentĀ“s expertise in the field of "Big Data in Medicine". Scientific focus in one or more of the following areas is expected: The development of architectures of regionally connected IT-systems in the health sector; data linkage and integration methods; cross-sectoral data protection concepts and data sovereignty; methods to improve data quality; pattern recognition approaches in complex, heterogeneous data sets; explorative approaches and methods of process mining to analyse care processes. In addition to the relevant departments of School VI and the Department of Computing Science of School II, the associated institute OFFIS as well as the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen are important partners.

With regard to teaching, the professorship covers the area of "Big Data in Medicine" in terms of content and methodology in the study programmes of School VI - Medicine and Health Sciences - and the Department of Computing Sciences. Dedication to innovative forms of knowledge transfer is expected.

Preconditions for employment are specified in Ā§ 30 NHG. In cases where a candidate, before or after obtaining his or her doctorate, has worked as a research assistant, the total duration of the period of doctoral study plus the period worked as a research assistant shall not exceed six years. Pending fulfilment of the applicable employment laws, the successful candidate will be employed as a temporary civil servant for a period of three years. A contract extension for a further three years is contingent on a positive evaluation. A subsequent appointment to a tenured professorship at W2 level at the end of this period is intended in accordance with the relevant statutory provisions.
