Description

Cities of the future will need to provide a wide array of services to their population with much less resource use and emissions than today. The topic of this research project is to study how salient city parameters (density, shape, and scale), urban metabolism (material and energy turnover) and cities’ social functioning (service provisioning, equity, and lifestyles) determine each other. The goal of this research project is to expand existing data and tools to identify city-specific structural change options to leverage a transition to a lean urban metabolism, with lower resource use, land occupation, and emissions to the environment. The work shall focus on

  • Using and expanding existing urban typologies to develop a basis for scenario formulation of the material and energy implications of future urban lifestyles.
  • Linking service provisioning by urban structures to urban metabolism and energy and material supply chains with the in-house RECC model.
  • Assessing, for a set of selected cities, possible transformation pathways and identify city-specific leverage points in the urban structure for decoupling urban development from resource use.

  • Fixed term working contract with the university of Freiburg for 4 years
  • The salary will be determined in accordance with E13 TV-L. 
  • The place of work is Freiburg. Solutions for home office can be arranged for.
  • The language for research and teaching is mainly English. German is used in many social settings at the faculty and university level, and non-German speakers are expected to make an effort to acquire some basic language skills during the first years of their stay in Germany.
  • The position comes with a teaching requirement of two hours per week per semester.

Expected profile of candidate’s qualification:

We seek for applicants who hold an MSc degree in a field that involves quantitative systems analysis, such as industrial ecology, environmental or natural sciences, chemical or environmental engineering, or economics. Basic programming skills (C, Python, or Matlab) are required. Very good knowledge of English is required, and knowledge of German is an advantage.
