Job title: Lecturer in Applied Psychology for Online Distance Learning Programmes (UE08)

School/Support Department: School of Health in Social Science

2. Job Purpose 
This post is designed to contribute to core teaching in Clinical Psychology, and to develop a research portfolio. Contribution to Programme Leadership, course organisation, curriculum development, teaching and research supervision will be predominantly to students on the MSc in Children and Young People’s Mental Health (Online Distance Learning). Involvement and development of independent research will be expected, either in collaboration with members of staff or in the applicant’s own area of interest.

3. Main Responsibilities

• Contribute to the Subject Area’s teaching activity in pursuit of explicit continuous improvement objectives and in line with appropriate best practice benchmarks. 
• To develop, lead, co-ordinate and contribute to courses in Clinical Psychology 
• Contribute to the delivery and development of approaches to teaching, learning and assessment in Clinical Psychology of outstanding quality and excellence. 
• Develop excellent online distance learning courses. 
• Supervise MSc dissertations for ODL students. 
• Provide Personal Tutorship to ODL students 
(Approx % of time 40)

• Contribute to research and knowledge exchange in the School by developing research proposals, research grants, and publications. 
(Approx % of time 40)

• Offer course coordination and programme directorship in Clinical Psychology 
• Mentor and develop early career colleagues 
• Develop and grow the Programme 
• Other duties as required.

• Plan and review own teaching, supervision and research activity 
• Workload will be determined by the subject area’s schedule and commitments.

5. Problem Solving 
• Assisting students to achieve their potential. 
• Identify students experiencing difficulties in their learning and assisting them to find solutions. 
• Resolve and make constructive use of unexpected issues arising in the course of teaching and research. 
• All of the above with a particular focus on students studying in an ODL mode.

6. Decision Making 
• Take responsibility for organising own activities and for the management of any resources allocated in the context of the wider teaching and research programmes.

8. Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed for the Job


• BPS recognised degree in Psychology, or equivalent from an overseas institution. 
• Postgraduate qualification in applied psychology (professional qualification and registration (HCPC) or PhD in Applied Psychology). 
• Knowledge and research expertise in a field relevant to psychology

Essential Attributes

• Experience and achievement in teaching applied psychology, reflected in a growing personal teaching portfolio. 
• Ability to design effective online distance learning programmes and to effectively deliver distance curricula and assessment. 
• Experience and demonstrated success in developing online distance methods and approaches. 
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity. 
• Ability to work independently but also be a constructive team member. 
• Ability to communicate clearly and work with complex theoretical ideas 
• Experience of offering dissertation supervision in an online distance learning format 
• Ability to lead small group teaching in tutorial formats 
• Ability to mark student assignments 
• A track record of research publications 
• Ability to develop an independent portfolio of research projects, publications and funding bids.

9. Dimensions 
The post-holder will engage in delivering MSc level teaching and applied psychology research supervision.

10. Job Context and any other relevant information 
The post will be based within Department of Clinical and Health Psychology, School of Health in Social Science, but could be flexibly located to acknowledge the ODL aspect of the post.
