NYU Washington, DC, is seeking a local, part-time instructor to teach a section of Arts and Cultures Across Antiquity at the academic center in Washington, DC for Fall 2021. The course will meet twice per week for 75 minutes each for 14 instructional weeks plus a 29th session during "finals week" for the final exam. The schedule is Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday. Although we do offer some evening classes, because the students are freshmen, we prefer to schedule this course during the morning or afternoon. The instructor role includes all preparation, delivery, and grading. Using Washington, DC (e.g., an excursion, a guest speaker, etc.) is an expectation for the course. Some administrative assistance is available to support the preparation of course materials. The instructor must be prepared to deliver course content remotely if conditions do not allow in-person instruction. Courses are to be intellectually challenging in content, and rigorous student assessment is required. Candidates should present demonstrated experience and commitment to interdisciplinarity and a teaching approach informed by a global perspective. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who share Liberal Studies’ commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life in LS and NYU DC. 

This course introduces the arts from their origins to the end of antiquity, as defined for these purposes by the roughly coincident dissolutions of the Gupta, Han, and Western Roman empires, focusing on how individuals and social relations are shaped in literature, the visual, plastic, and performing arts, and through music. Conceptions of the divine, the heroic, power and disenfranchisement, beauty, love, gender, and sexuality may be examined within the context of the art and literature of East and South Asia, the Mediterranean world, and contiguous regions (such as Germania, Nubia, and Mesopotamia). Students must complete a total of 3000-3750 words of graded writing or the equivalent, a midterm, and a final exam.

Liberal Studies' Core Program provides a dynamic, creative, and intersectional approach to the liberal arts and an interdisciplinary global foundation for nearly 100 majors at NYU. The curriculum emphasizes conceptual and spatial frameworks to trace the movement of ideas and the interconnectivity of material culture, through the study of different texts, histories, exchanges, structures and systems, languages, arts, and writing from early antiquity through contemporary times. Small, seminar-style classes and close faculty-student interaction ensure the benefits of a liberal arts college within our large urban research university.

Learning takes a global focus in the core curriculum. Students develop their critical thinking and analytical abilities, expand their intellectual curiosity, explore diverse social and political perspectives, and hone their writing and communication skills - all essential to success in an increasingly interconnected world.

Qualifications

The candidate is expected to have a Ph.D. or terminal degree in a relevant field, at least one full year of teaching, and must be approved by the appropriate academic unit at NYU. ABD doctoral students with teaching experience may also be considered.
