Position description

The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a full-time lecturer who will serve as a Biochemical Engineering Laboratory Instructor with an expected start date of July 1, 2021.

The position will share responsibility for the effective operation of the CHM ENG 170L Biochemical Engineering Laboratory and related operations in the Biomolecular Engineering curriculum. The CHM ENG 170 A, B, and L series of courses is designed to introduce the essential concepts of bioprocessing to chemical engineers for applications in the biopharmaceutical, industrial biotech, and food tech industries. The emphasis of the 170A lecture course will be on cells and how to make products by designing unit operations and processes around those living systems. The focus of the 170B lecture course will primarily be on the recovery, separations, and purification of bio-based products. The 170L laboratory will provide hands-on opportunities to translate fundamentals learned in 170A and 170B to meaningful applications. The combined curriculum provides a comprehensive biochemical engineering training and tool kit in the analysis, design, development, scale-up, and commercialization of biochemical processes and products.

The Biochemical Engineering Laboratory Instructor will be responsible for design, preparation, demonstration, and supervision of laboratory experiments including:
• basic wet laboratory skills including molecular cloning
• media and equipment sterilization
• cell growth and harvesting
• set up and operations of 2L and 15L batch fermentation
• microbial expression of small molecules and proteins
• recovery, separations, and purification of small molecules and proteins including centrifugation, filtration, and column chromatography
• analytical assays to assess molecular identity, yield, productivity, titer, purity

• maintain bioprocess equipment and instrumentation (ex. fermentor preparation, sterilization, and instrument calibration)
• troubleshoot technical, experimental, and operational issues as necessary
• purchase and maintain supplies of laboratory consumables
• prepare laboratory and train graduate student instructors overseeing students performing the experiments and exercises
• modify experiments in collaboration with faculty and other teaching staff
• support purchase of new laboratory equipment and software, make recommendations for new or replacement laboratory equipment
• develop and maintain course materials, manuals, and standard operating procedures (SOP’s) for use by students
• continuously develop and review educational goals and outcomes
• review, assess, and provide feedback on student performance including in-lab activities, laboratory notebooks, written reports, and oral presentations
• lead effort to keep lab organized and operating efficiently
• train and monitor safety and other laboratory best practices

Basic qualifications (must be met at time of application): Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) program.

Additional qualifications (must be met by start date): Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) and at least two years of technical and laboratory experience.

Preferred qualifications:
• prior teaching experience
• fundamental and applied knowledge of living cells, fermentation, and downstream processing
• familiarity with and demonstrated experience in maintaining, testing, repairing, and calibrating bioprocess laboratory equipment and control systems
• strong analytical and problem solving skills
• outstanding written and verbal communication
• flexibility and adaptability to meet the dynamic needs of an academic environment
