Role Description

Applications are invited for a full-time Lectureship in Cinematography for Film and Television, available from January 2022. This position will be appointed at Lecturer level on either a teaching and scholarship (T&S) or research and teaching (ART) contract.

You will join an innovative and rapidly expanding department that brings together research, teaching and commercial activities in the fields of film, television, theatre and interactive media. The department features a bespoke £30m building with industry-standard facilities, which have been used in support of over 20 commercially released feature films as well as numerous television projects for the BBC, ITV and other broadcasters.  This post offers an exciting opportunity to be involved in a high-profile department, one that is committed to the dynamic interaction of academic scholarship with creative practice and professional skills.  We place a high value on facilitating academic-industry collaborations to enhance both teaching and research for conventional and next generation media.

Role

You will play a significant role in the delivery and assessment of single camera film and television production teaching with the focus on cinematography. You will contribute to production-related modules for our ScreenSkills-accredited BSc in Film and Television Production and MA in Film and Television Production with Cinematography programmes. You will also be involved in the supervision of students and undertake administrative responsibilities in the Department. In addition:

  • For a teaching and scholarship (T&S) contract: you will exhibit links to professional work in the field of cinematography through commercial outlets and/or disseminate related scholarship through conventional channels.
  • For a research and teaching (ART) contract: you will carry out and publish high impact research across cinematography-related subjects in quality journals, and devise, direct and develop projects generating external research funding.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have detailed knowledge and experience of current industry practice and working in academia as well as have the ambition to make an impact in your field, demonstrate internationally-relevant scholarship through either professional practice or conventional academic research, and inspire students through innovative teaching. You will ideally have demonstrated expertise in cinematography through professional work in film or television and possess strong knowledge of digital production workflows. This should include professional credits in camera or lighting department roles for national or internationally released film or television work and experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • location-based narrative (fiction) production;
  • commercial short form work (e.g., advertisements, music promos);
  • single-camera studio-based production;
  • documentary production;
  • DIT procedures and digital cinema workflows

A PhD in Film and Television Production (ideally with an emphasis in Cinematography) or equivalent professional industry experience is essential. In addition, experience in shooting for Virtual Production and/or visual effects and knowledge of editing systems and techniques is highly desirable.

We particularly encourage applications from female and BAME candidates, who are currently under-represented within the University of York in this area.
