Lecturer in Creative Writing

New York University

United States

Description

NYU London is currently recruiting for a part-time lecturer to teach an undergraduate creative writing course. Teaching commences in the Autumn Term (7 Sept - 18 Dec 2020).

Course Description

This seminar-style class consists of tutor-led discussions, student-led discussions, creative-writing exercises, field trips, group feedback and creative-writing workshops. Enrolment is limited to 15 students.

Taking a practical approach to the drafting of short stories and poetry, the class emphasises learning to read as writers in order to glean tips on the craft. Textual analysis provides a springboard for students’ own writing, with close reading forming the usual method of critiquing both published works and the students’ work. Through a combination of structured creative writing exercises and independent assignments, with regular feedback from both the instructor and each other, students develop their powers of imagination, self-criticism and craft.

The literary-steeped surroundings of London provide the perfect backdrop for students to develop their creative skills. This course therefore provides students studying away from their home campus with the rare opportunity to develop their work within the context of UK and international writing in English. By the end of the class, each student will have collected a portfolio of work consisting of both poetry and prose.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this class, students will be able to:

  • Read as writers, developing their critical faculties and their confidence so that they can analyze their own writing as well as that of others.
  • Identify and use a range of writing craft techniques.
  • Structure their work through a variety of different voices and forms.

Expectation of Hours

The semester is 15 weeks (14 weeks of teaching plus an exam week) and there are 2.5 hours of classroom instruction each week.  In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and marking, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute “office hour” at NYU London per week, during which time she or he will be available to meet with students.
