Founded in 1947, the Philip Merrill College of Journalism has approximately 600 undergraduate and graduate students and approximately 60 faculty and staff. Merrill is located just 10 miles from the White House and was chosen as one of 12 top journalism schools that took part in the prestigious Carnegie-Knight Initiative. Over the past year, student investigative journalists from Merrill College won six major national professional awards for their innovative use of data storytelling tools and collaborating with student and professional newsrooms across the country.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland, Philip Merrill College of Journalism seeks a data journalist to teach courses and work with students on reporting projects.

Do you like working collaboratively? Do you enjoy using data to help inform groundbreaking projects? Do you get excited exploring new forms of storytelling? Are you eager to mentor the next generation of investigative journalists?

If so, read on.

The successful candidate must be able to teach data or computational journalism courses in person and online to both undergraduate and graduate students. They must also be able to work collaboratively with students, faculty and visiting journalists on national and regional projects managed by the Capital News Service and the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism. Experience with big data analysis is a plus.

In addition to data and computational journalism, the ideal candidate will have experience working in one or more of the following areas: data analysis, data visualization, programming, web development, web design or statistics.

In the last several years, students and faculty have worked collaboratively on innovative, data-intensive projects that have won numerous professional awards, including Code Red, Growing Up Behind Bars and Nowhere to Go. They have partnered with National Public Radio, The Associated Press, USA Today, and other professional news organizations.

This is a professional track position and does not include tenure.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required. Real world experience, preferably in a newsroom, executing data or computational journalism projects is expected.


Masters degree. University-level teaching experience and mentoring experience is a plus.
