About This Opportunity 


This is an exciting opportunity for an Associate Lecturer/Lecturer to develop and deliver interdisciplinary design studios and communications courses. Emphasis is on the synthesis of analogue and digital teaching methods in the studio context, and it is expected that the content and agenda of the design studios and communications courses will be future-focused and address critical and technical issues in the disciplines and practices of design. This role is also encouraged to support interdisciplinary (cross-school) collaboration in terms of both developing a vision and actions.


The successful candidate will be committed to developing and leading innovative design teaching, practice, and research. We are currently seeking candidates whose experience enables them to teach in one or more of the following areas of the curriculum:

  • Visual Communication

  • Digital Design

  • User Experience Design

  • Design and Business

  • Environment and Sustainability

  • Social Design

  • Professional Practice


Key responsibilities will include: 


Teaching and learning

  • Coordinate courses, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials, and undertake assessment and marking for design courses.

  • Teach across different settings and actively contribute towards educational practice and innovative curriculum design including online learning and alternative teaching methods.

  • Participate in educational practice and innovative curriculum design including online learning and alternative teaching methods.

  • Maintain and improve the quality of courses as measured through evaluation instruments to meet industry and educational standards.

  • Contribute to the teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

  • Provide high quality service to students, including academic counselling and advice.

  • Understand and apply University Rules relevant to teaching and learning practice.



  • Develop a coherent research program and an emerging research profile.

  • Work with colleagues and postgraduates in the development of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support.

  • Participate in applications for competitive research funding support.

  • Publish or exhibit in high quality outlets (often in collaboration with colleagues).

  • Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.

  • Prepare research publications and progress reports and participate in regular meetings to discuss project objectives, methodology and outcomes.


Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Contribute to the effective supervision of Master’s and Higher Degree by Research students (as appropriate).

  • Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and the management of researcher development.

  • Demonstrates active engagement in the responsible conduct of research.

  • Contributes to the development of supervisee capabilities and skills.


Citizenship and Service

  • Consistently demonstrate UQ values.

  • Shows leadership of self through collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the unit.

  • Begin to develop external links by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

  • Contribute to internal service roles and processes, including participation in decision-making and service on relevant committees.

  • Provide support to other academic positions as needed and during absences.

  • Perform a range of administrative functions.


For appointment at an Academic Level B


Duties as listed above, in addition to the following:

  • Participate in the development of new programs and course material in one of the six (6) theme areas of focus, by consulting with program advisors and stakeholders, ensuring courses are engaging, relevant and contemporary.

  • Engage in independent and/or team research program including external funding and achieve national recognition and impact in the research area.

  • Work with colleagues and postgraduates in the development and conduct of joint research projects, especially projects that are interdisciplinary and contribute to the strategic direction of the School.

  • Foster relations with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

  • Shows leadership of self and others through mentoring and collaboration.

This is a full-time (100%), fixed-term position for up to 12 months at an Academic level A or B.


Level A - the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $77,324.85 - $102,945.12, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $90,470.08 - $120,445.79 annually.


Level B - the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $108,201.26 - $128,201.75, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $126,595.47 - $149,996.05 annually.


As the role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases in line with the Enterprise Agreement.

About You  

  • PhD in in design or other related discipline.

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of the diverse ways in which design is deployed.

  • Demonstrate potential to teach at the intersection of design, technology and culture through studios, workshops and/or seminars to both undergraduate and postgraduate students from a diversity of backgrounds.

  • Demonstrable excellence in the field of design, experience in teaching design studios, and a strong promise of significant creative achievement in the field through design work, research, professional practice, or a combination thereof.

  • Emerging record of supervision of Higher Degree by Research students.

  • Show evidence of your current and emerging program of research, peer reviewed publications in leading journals and a pipeline of research-in-progress which is targeting high quality journals.

  • Evidence of established, effective and growing relationships that can promote the School within the University, the national and international Design academy, and the wider community, including industry, government and professional bodies.

  • High-level communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills that are consistent with the values of the School and University, and evidence of developing leadership skills.

  • Demonstrate the ability to balance demands in teaching, research and other service activities while maintaining a high level of work productivity.


Additional for a level B

  • Supervise Honours and Higher Degree by Research students.

  • Demonstrate experience coordination or leading research projects.

  • Evidence of national recognition in your research field.
