In the British and American Studies Department at the University of Oldenburg a position as a

Lecturer in

English Language Practice (Sprachpraxis)

(Lehrkraft für besondere Aufgaben in der Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L)

will be available from April 1, 2022 as a permanent part-time position (50%) with working hours of 19.9 hours per week.

The language practice team is responsible for providing practical instruction in academic English to students majoring in English and English language teaching. Undergraduate courses primarily involve teaching advanced (C1 level) written and spoken language skills with a focus on Anglophone cultural topics. Graduate courses involve teaching C2 level academic discourse and English for educational purposes.

The position involves:

  • teaching 4-5 courses (9 teaching hours) per semester of practical academic English courses with a focus on Anglophone cultural topics. The precise teaching load is determined by the state regulations in Lower Saxony (LVVO).
  • curriculum development, course design and assessment.
  • teaching-related administrative work, including assessment coordination and co-examining
  • student advising extending beyond teaching courses in both the teaching and non-teaching periods (e.g. in the form of office hours).
  • team-oriented planning of parallel seminars and assessments (including involvement in oral exams) as well as digital teaching and learning resources utilizing cloud software and Stud.IP (Oldenburg LMS) where necessary. 

Applicants must:

  • hold a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, for example TESOL, (Applied) Linguistics, Foreign Languages or English Studies.
  • have experience in ESL/EFL teaching, preferably at the university level or other relevant teaching experience with very advanced English-language learners (C1)
  • be experienced in developing courses and designing materials independently
  • be native or near-native speakers of English
  • have experience working and/or studying in an English-speaking country
  • possess a working knowledge of German.

Preference will be given to applicants who fulfil as many of the following additional criteria as possible:

  • qualifications in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA, DELTA, Trinity Cert./ Dip. TESOL, MA TESOL, MA Applied Linguistics etc.)
  • teaching experience in EAP (English for Academic Purposes), particularly in the field of Academic Writing
  • teaching experience developing the English language skills of future classroom teachers for different school types
  • extensive teaching experience at the university level or other relevant teaching experience with very advanced English-language learners (C1/C2)
  • experience in offline and digital teaching-related administrative work
  • familiarity with the use and design of digital media in the classroom (e.g. online teaching, instructional videos)
  • a positive attitude towards creative and efficient teamwork
  • an extensive period of residence in an English-speaking country
  • regular and substantial contact to the Anglophone world
