About us
The English Department at UCL is one of the oldest the country, founded in 1828, and is recognised as among the leading departments of English Language and English Linguistics in the world. The Department offers a single honours degree which covers the full range of the subject, and two MA programmes in: English Linguistics, and Issues in Modern Culture. These programmes and our PhD programme are successful in attracting students from overseas as well as the UK and EU. The Department consists of about 30 full-time permanent staff, approximately 330 single-honours undergraduates, 80 graduate students, 60 research students and, each year, about 50 affiliate students. We have buoyant UCAS applications, with thirteen applicants per place and a high-quality intake (an average UCAS point score of 387). The Department is housed in one site on two floors of Foster Court, which is within the main part of UCL, and is close to such major research institutions as the British Library, the University of London Library, and the Warburg Institute.
About the role
We are seeking to appoint an Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in English Literature, primarily to teach undergraduate modules covering literatures in English of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries They will also be required to give one-to-one tutorials to undergraduate students; to undertake the normal duties of teaching administration; and to attend departmental meetings. The person appointed will also be expected to participate in the interviewing of UCAS applicants and marking of interview candidates’ written work.
About you
Applicants must have a doctorate in English Literature and proven ability in teaching literature in English from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. A knowledge of classical texts in relation to English literature is essential. Applicants must also have experience in teaching one-to-one tutorials, entailing not only the development of learning, but also monitoring student progress, achievement and attendance and the provision of pastoral care and support.
