King's College London is continuing its significant investment in the Department of Digital Humanities as part of an ambitious programme of expansion into growing and emergent research areas and a rapidly expanding student base across its five MA programmes and the BA Digital Culture. We are seeking to recruit exceptional candidates to join the Department no later than 1st September, who can enthuse and inspire our students, and contribute to the life and research reputation of the Department.

This is a full time post - 100% full time equivalent.

Role Purpose
The Department of Digital Humanities is seeking to appoint a Lecturer to contribute to our teaching and research in all areas related to virtual environments and games. We are looking for a range of expertise to support our fast expanding programmes across all our MA programmes in digital culture and digital asset
and media management as well as our BA in Digital Culture.

Candidates will be expected to provide high-quality teaching across all levels, including the undergraduate, master, and Ph.D., to supervise undergraduate and graduate student dissertations, and to engage in excellent research, including the potential for grant capture.

The post holder will complement existing teaching in the Department and offer students new opportunities in the critical study of virtual environments and games. She/he will support student specialization in virtual environments and corresponding digital practices in virtual, augmented, mediated, or mixed reality. She/he may have experience with these technologies in the context of interactive narratives or game design and use methods such as web history, computer supported collaboration, graphics, and visualization; offering opportunities to think about a range of social and cultural issues, such as gender and race, commercialization, design, etc.

Successful candidates will also undertake pastoral and administrative duties, including personal tutoring and contribution to Departmental, Faculty and University administration.

Candidates will contribute to the life and reputation of the Department, the Faculty, and the College through taking on an appropriate administrative role, contributing to internal networks and collaborations, taking part in external national and international activities, and undertaking industry and public engagement where appropriate.

Role profile
General:
The duties of the post will require the performance of research, teaching, and administration as directed by the Head of Department and in line with expectations of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

Post holders will be able to make an appropriate contribution to the next Research Excellence Framework (REF), and will be expected to share the Faculty’s ethos whereby staff are committed to translating their research into outstanding teaching and student care.

Post holders will be expected to share in the vision and practice of collaborative working.

They will be able to balance the competing pressures of research, teaching and administrative demands and deadlines.

Research:
Post holders will have the potential to become an internationally excellent academic, with a research and publication record that demonstrates that potential, including for impact. Post holders will have a clear plan for building research and impact outputs for the next Research Excellence Framework (REF). Post holders will possess an in-depth understanding of their own research specialism to enable the development of new knowledge and understanding within the field.

They will contribute to the development of the Departmental research strategy and contribute to one or more of the Department’s research areas.

Post holders will have the potential to contribute to successful bids for research grant applications from a variety of high-quality sources.

Post holders will be expected to foster existing and develop new connections and collaborations with other academics and practitioners in their field (in the UK and ideally overseas).

They will be capable of disseminating conceptual and complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences using appropriate media and methods to promote understanding and will seek to enhance the reputation and standing of the Department and the Faculty through these activities.

Education
Post holders will be expected to provide high-quality teaching and supervision at undergraduate and masters’ levels, and once established to attract Ph.D. students and provide excellent research student supervision.

They will develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and materials, which create interest, understanding, and enthusiasm amongst students of diverse and international cultural backgrounds.

They will identify opportunities for the development of new modules in their area of expertise and be able to contribute fully to the development of such ideas.

They will ensure that module and programme design and delivery comply with the quality standards and regulations of the university and the department. They will review on a regular basis module and programme content and materials, updating when required.

As committed teachers, they will be able to deal with referred issues for students.

Administration
Post holders will be required to take on administrative roles and to contribute fully to the administration and management of all aspects of the Department.

They will contribute to departmental level strategic planning in areas such as the research strategy, the balance of student recruitment, and student and other performance matters, staffing requirements.

Post holders will provide academic leadership such as providing module leadership.

They will take part in mentoring activities with peers and colleagues and contribute to the collegiate culture of the Department.

They will be expected to develop internal networks and external networks that foster collaboration and contribute to the management of teaching and research quality, audit and other external assessments.
