About the Role

The Department of English in the School of English and Drama in Queen Mary’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences seeks to appoint a full-time Lecturer in Modern Literature. This 12-month fixed-term Lectureship is to provide cover while Professor Peter Howarth is on AHRC-funded research leave, and also to contribute to our general teaching provision where appropriate. The successful applicant will be able to contribute to the development and delivery of team teaching in poetry and modernist literature, be able to teach canonical and non-canonical materials and be able to demonstrate that they have an innovative attitude towards the current state of literary studies. Modules to be taught may include: ‘Poetry’ (level 4), ‘Modernism’ (level 5) and ‘Modernism and Democracy’ (level 6).

About You

The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in English, or a related field, and must have a growing or established research profile and substantial plans for future research. They will join a Department committed to an interdisciplinary and global approach to Anglophone literary studies, and with significant expertise in modern literature/studies. Experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels in large or small group settings is an essential requirement. The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is full time, fixed term for 12 months as a result of absence cover with an expected start date of 1 September 2022. The starting salary will be Grade 5, Spinal Point 35, £43,069 per annum (pro rata) inclusive of London Allowance.
