About Us:

The School of Optometry and Vision Science (SOVS) - part of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland - is the only Optometry school in New Zealand. We offer a 5-year Bachelor of Optometry (BOptom) programme which qualifies our graduates to practice optometry in New Zealand and Australia. As part of our programme we operate a full scope optometry clinic adjacent to the school.

The Opportunity:

We seek to appoint a Lecturer to teach into our BOptom programme and to conduct research in vision science. SOVS research covers a range of themes including paediatric optometry, imaging (of eye and brain), myopia, age-related eye disease, bioengineering, and basic visual neuroscience.  As a Lecturer you will undertake postgraduate student supervision, teach undergraduates (including supervision in the clinic), and support wider-activities in the school and university.

The Appointee:

  • Will hold a PhD in Optometry & Vision Science or a related discipline (essential)  
  • Will have a track record of research productivity evidenced by publications in international peer-reviewed journals (essential) and through successful application for competitive research funding (desirable)
  • Will hold a qualification that is recognised for registration as an Optometrist with therapeutic competencies in New Zealand (essential)
  • Should have experience in facilitating student learning, assessing students’ work and evaluating course content and delivery (desirable)
