Lecturer/Research Fellow in Food Science 

  • Full time, fixed term appointment for three years 
  • Based in Launceston
  • Contribute to periodic research work within the Defence Science and Technology Group (DST) Food and Nutrition Laboratories.

The Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA) is a research institute at the University of Tasmania specialising in research, development, extension and education to support prosperous, innovative and sustainable agriculture and food sectors in Tasmania.

The Opportunity

The Lecturer/Research Fellow in Food Science will provide research and postgraduate training to serve the growing industry funded fresh produce shelf life and quality research. Additionally, the successful applicant will support the added value meals food quality and safety research in association with DST and CSIRO.

This position will contribute to the digitalisation of data for Industry 4.0 applications using artificial intelligence approaches. The focus will be to match instrumental data to human perceptions of food quality to optimise production, processing and storage variables and produce premium foods of high sensory impact. 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Contribute to the University’s achievement of strategic objectives and fulfillment of operational responsibilities.
  • Post graduate research supervision in food quality measurement and new product development related areas.
  • Develop and deliver food, agriculture and nutrition courses to meet identified demands and opportunities.
  • Visible role in northern development and promotion of UTAS.
  • Develop capabilities that will increase the proportion of Tasmanian secondary students enrolling in food/STEM at UTAS.

Your Application

To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate:

  • Australian citizenship and ability to qualify for Australian Government Baseline Security Clearance.
  • A PhD in a relevant food science field.
  • Expertise in food quality measurements using advanced instrumentation.
  • Competency for developing artificial intelligence approaches to match instrumental data to human perceptions of food quality.
  • Capability to run food sensory and new product development science.


Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $133,842 comprising base salary within the range of $98,537 to $114,395 plus 17% superannuation.
