The Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of UNSW’s newest faculty, Arts, Design & Architecture (ADA). Through creativity, collaboration and inclusion we seek and solve problems to improve life on earth. We listen, challenge, create and share diverse knowledge about people, place and culture to enable lives with purpose.

We are six Schools, six research centres, home to three prestigious ARC Laureates, the stunning Esme Timbery theatre and Creative Practice Lab, UNSW Galleries, iCinema, the Design Futures Lab, and multiple other maker spaces, Institutes, Labs and Studios across our Kensington and Paddington campuses.

As a new faculty, it is our priority to develop an Indigenous Strategy to affect long-term change in the educational outcomes of Indigenous students and the intellectual and cultural integrity of Indigenous teaching and research across the faculty.

The Planning Program in the School of Built Environment is looking for an outstanding teaching and research academic to join our team. The Program offers PIA-accredited degrees in City Planning at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and working together with the City Futures Research Centre, represents one of the foremost centres for urban planning research and education in Australia and indeed internationally. Awarded a ‘5’ In the 2012, 2015 and 2018 ERA assessments in the ‘1205’ (now 3304) code, our commitment to both world-leading research and innovative, applied teaching provides the platform for educating Australia’s next generation of urban thinkers and practitioners.

We are looking for an early to mid-career academic with a strong research track record (relative to opportunity) and extensive teaching experience to help deliver our accredited degree programs and contribute to research excellence. In terms of urban planning specialisations of particular interest, we are especially keen to hear from applicants with interests in land-use planning, regulatory frameworks and policy reform, urban management, and development. As well as academic experience, ideally you will also have gained experience working as a practising planner, whether in urban policy, local government or private practice. Your primary teaching, engagement and leadership responsibilities will sit in the Planning Program. Where appropriate, you will be encouraged to pursue your research interests in conjunction with the City Futures Research Centre, and take advantage of interdisciplinary opportunities across the School, Faculty and University.

The level on appointment will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

A level B academic is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the school and to carry out activities to maintain and develop their scholarly research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession and discipline. An appointment at Level C is expected to make significant contributions in both teaching and research, with the latter evidenced in a firm, upward trajectory of Q1 scholarly journal publications and Category 1 research funding aligned to ERA 1205/3304.
