Lectureship in Law (Specific Purpose), School of Law, College of Business and Law

As part of a package of significant strategic investment in the School of Law, UCC wishes to appoint:

(1) a Professor in EU Law titled the Synnott Family Chair in EU Law to commence ideally in Autumn 2020. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Law, the postholder must demonstrate research leadership, a very significant record of research output and excellence in teaching in an area of EU law. Applicants will be expected to hold a doctorate or equivalent and have a substantial level of experience;

(2) three permanent Lectureships and one specific purpose Lectureship (anticipated duration of 2 years) particularly but not exclusively in the fields of EU Law, Human Rights Law, Marine or Maritime Law Commercial Law or IT Law.

The Chair, generously funded by UCC alumnus, Aidan Synnott, is part of a strategic initiative to develop UCC as a very significant centre of EU Law scholarship on the existing strength in the School. The aim is to develop a world-leading research Centre in an area of EU Law under the leadership of this Chair in order to take advantage of the opportunities posed by Brexit and Ireland’s growing significance as the only common law state in the EU. The planned Centre is designed to facilitate disciplinary and interdisciplinary research into key areas of EU Law, attract high quality research partners, research grants and excellent PhD students.

The Professor will be required to develop and lead a Centre in an area of EU Law, take the lead in research including securing ERC funding and, under the direction of the Dean of the School of Law, contribute to all School activities including teaching. They will be expected to make a full contribution to the School’s programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The Lectureships are intended to build on areas of strength in the School, including the development of the planned Centre in EU Law and other research Centres. Postholders will be expected to be research active with the potential for securing ERC funding and will be expected to make a full contribution to the School’s programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level as appropriate under the direction of the Dean of the School of Law. For the two-year post, it is desirable that the successful candidate can teach an area of law in Irish.

Appointment for the Chair post may be made on the Professor Salary Scale: €117,916 – €151,477 (Scale B).

Appointment for the Lectureship posts may be made on the Lectureship Salary Scale: €34,067 - €60,167 (Scale B).

Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
