Specific Purpose Whole-time Post
(anticipated duration of 2.5 years)

University College Cork wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Microbiology. Reporting to the Head of School, the candidate will join a School with an established track-record for excellence in teaching, research, publication and engagement with external stakeholders. The School of Microbiology is a modern, vibrant unit, performing internationally recognized research and delivering high quality teaching programmes in the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) and the College of Medicine and Health at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The School achieved a 5/5 score in the last Research Quality Review and an ‘excellent’ score in its periodic Quality Review of its academic programmes. Staff of the School are significant contributors to the research activities of the UCC-based APC Microbiome Institute and the Environmental Research Institute and have extensive international collaborations. In its teaching and research activities the School has maintained a broad interest across the major sub-disciplines of Microbiology (Food, Medical, Food & Health, Environment Biotechnology, Virology) in addition to fostering a core of fundamental technology platforms such as bioinformatics, molecular genetics, genomics, microbial physiology, metagenomics). We are now seeking to strengthen our activities by appointing a Lectureship in Virology with an emphasis on molecular approaches to the study of human viruses. The primary function of the appointee will contribute to our undergraduate and post-graduate Microbiology-related degrees programmes. Applicants for the posts must therefore have a PhD and research experience, but also show experience (or evidence of potential) in teaching and examining at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels. The appointee will be encouraged to develop formal skills and qualifications in pedagogic methods. They will also be encouraged to identify collaborative opportunities with research programmes within and outside the School of Microbiology, in order to develop their own research credentials and also the virology research profile of the School.

Appointment may be made on the Lectureship Salary Scale: €34,748 – €61,370 / €67,073 – €86,241 (Scale B).
Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
