We are looking for

The Behavioural Science Institute has an opening for a PhD candidate on an NRO-funded project entitled 'Impact of activities in gifted education' (IMAGE). The goal of this project is to enhance knowledge about improving education for gifted students by measuring the impact of interventions that are currently applied at Dutch schools for primary and secondary education. An integrated, mixed-methods approach will be applied to collect, analyse and integrate information from students and from policy, educational and family actors. You will be part of a large consortium of partners who will closely collaborate on this goal. Your role will mainly be to elaborate the initial project proposal, to collect and analyse the data, and to report the results in scientific and educational journals, at scientific and educational conferences, and in a doctoral dissertation. The project proposal is available on request.

We ask

  • Master's degree, preferably a Research Master's, in pedagogy, (special/gifted) education, educational/developmental psychology, or a similar relevant field.
  • Experience in empirical research, preferably both quantitative and qualitative.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Clear affinity with gifted education, and experience with scientific writing.
  • A good command of spoken and written Dutch and English is essential.
  • Experience in (primary/secondary) educational settings will be considered advantageous.

We are

The research project is part of the Learning and Plasticity programme of the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI) and is supervised by Dr Marjolijn van Weerdenburg and Profs. Anouke Bakx and Evelyn Kroesbergen. The BSI is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Radboud University. It is a multidisciplinary behavioural research institute. Our researchers collaborate across the boundaries of psychology, educational science and communication science. The BSI has seven research programmes covering three major research themes: 1) development and learning, 2) psychopathology, health and well-being, and 3) social processes and communication. The BSI is globally recognised for its top-quality research on human behaviour. We conduct fundamental research as well as applied/translational research. The BSI has state-of-the-art research facilities for observational studies, experiments, eye-tracking studies, EEG and other physiological measures, and behavioural measurements in real and 3D virtual environments. The neuroimaging facilities of the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (fMRI, MEG and TMS) are available for research on the neural bases of behaviour. Moreover, the BSI is known for its successful graduate school and strong commitment to Open Science. 

Within the Learning and Plasticity programme, research on gifted education is centred in RATIO (RAdboud Talent in Ontwikkeling) (centre of expertise for talent in development).

We offer

  • Employment: 36 - 40 hours per week.
  • The gross starting salary amounts to €2,395 per month, and will increase to €3,061 in the fourth year (P scale).
  • In addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • Duration of the contract: you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years.
  • The intended start date is 1 October 2020.
