Job description

• To strengthen its research capacity in newly emerging research fields in theoretical philosophy, the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Utrecht University is currently looking for a PhD candidate in one of the following areas:
• Philosophical logic and philosophy of logic (potential supervisors: Prof Rosalie Iemhoff and Prof Daniel Cohnitz);
• Formal logic modelling and cognitive science (potential supervisors: Prof Rosalie Iemhoff, Prof Daniel Cohnitz and Prof Jan Broersen);
• Neuro-symbolic AI, ethics and knowledge representation (potential supervisors: Prof Jan Broersen and Prof Rosalie Iemhoff);
• Mathematical logic and philosophy of mathematics (potential supervisors: Prof Rosalie Iemhoff and Prof Daniel Cohnitz);
• Social epistemology, post truth and AI (potential supervisors: Prof Daniel Cohnitz and Prof Jan Broersen);
• Game theory, norms and simulation of social interactions (potential supervisors: Prof Daniel Cohnitz and Prof Jan Broersen).

Qualifications

The PhD position (4 years) is independent of any overarching research project and is funded by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Utrecht University. We ask prospective candidates to write a brief proposal fitting in with one of these themes. The proposal should be no longer than 2,000 words (excluding references). All proposals will be reviewed by a team that includes the potential supervisors mentioned.

The ranking of the proposals will be based on the following general criteria:

• originality, timeliness and motivation;
• fit with the above themes and research of the potential supervisors;
• strength/background/fitness of the candidate for the proposed research.

Qualifications:

• an MA or equivalent degree in Philosophy or a cognate discipline;
• proficiency in academic English;
• ability to work independently and in a team, with good organizational and communication skills.

Offer

We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE) for a period of 18 months. In case of good performance and a positive evaluation, the contract will be extended for the remaining period of 30 months (4 years in total). The gross salary ranges between €2,395 in the first year and €3,061 in the fourth year (scale P according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model).
