PhD-Fellowship for a Project on Modern Chinese History

Applications are invited for a PhD fellowship starting January 2020 at the Sinology Unit, Faculty of Arts, University of Leuven.


Pre-selection of KU-Leuven supported PhD-Fellowship on projects related to modern history of China in the following topics:
• Global history of the Cold War (with a focus on China, East/South-east Asia)
• International economic relations (particularly on China - Europe)
• Economic history in XXth century China;
• Business history (entrepreneurs; business/government relations; industrial clusters) and/or history of capitalism in China
• Ethnic or religious business networks (Chinese transnational business)

Applications are invited for PhD fellowships starting January 2020 at the Sinology Unit, Faculty of Arts, University of Leuven. The selected candidate/s will receive formal support to submit application for funding on 1st March 2020.


● A Master degree in History or in Chinese Studies obtained in the EEA area (must be obtained not earlier than 3 years before the closing date of the FWO call on March 1st 2020);
● On 1 March 2020 (submission deadline for FWO funding) you have 18 months academic seniority at most;
● Proficiency in English and Chinese. Knowledge of other languages (particularly: German or Japanese) is considered a plus;
● Strong analytical skills and motivation to pursue innovative work in modern Chinese history;
● Willingness to develop an interdisciplinary research approach, which may include the study of Management Studies/Development Economics/Economic and Business History;
● Excellent oral communication and demonstrable skills in scholarly writing;
● Ability to work independently and to contribute creatively to a research project;
● Commitment to complete the project in time and to deliver intermediary results at conferences and publications.



The selected project/s will receive formal support by Professor Valeria Zanier and the Faculty of Arts Research Support officers with their application for scholarships funded by the FWO (Flanders Research Foundation). If the funding is awarded, a full-time PhD position will be offered. The successful candidate/s will receive a salary of approximately 2100 EUR/month (after taxes) for a period of two years, renewable by another 2 years if the candidate’s scientific progress in the project can be demonstrated. They will be allocated office space, and receive additional funding for research activities like attending conferences abroad and organizing workshops in Leuven or elsewhere. The successful candidate/s may be asked to provide (limited) assistance with teaching, student supervision and data management.
