Project Title: Secretion and autophagy and their role in neurodegeneration 

The Behrends lab at the Munich Cluster of Systems Neurology (SyNergy) of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) München is looking for a doctoral researcher, who is interested in investigating the crosstalk between secretion and autophagy and its role in neurodegeneration. 

Most neurodegenerative disorders exhibit alterations in proteostasis, i.e. an imbalance between protein production, sorting and degradation. The secretory and the autophagic pathways are two major regulators of cellular proteostasis. Therefore, understanding the crosstalk between secretion and autophagy as well as their roles in neurodegeneration holds the promise to identify new therapeutic avenues to target neurodegenerative disorders. 

This project is part of a new Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action funded Innovative Training Network which aims at exploiting and translating fundamental biology principles of autophagy, secretion and their crosstalk in human diseases. The network brings together leading experts in the fields of autophagy, secretion and neurodegeneration from academia and industry into a consortium that involves 22 participants from 12 countries across Europe. Besides complementary interdisciplinary expertise the network provides a framework for training and supervision of students to provide them with a repertoire of transferrable and scientific skills that will equip them for careers in academia and industry. 

Projects in the Behrends lab are centered around the autophagy pathway. In particular, we seek to systematically elucidate protein networks in a spatiotemporal manner and dissect functions involved in regulating the autophagic quality and quantity control of organelles and proteins. This information is then used to understand mechanisms by which disease states usurpate the cell’s homeostatic system. We employ a broad range of experimental strategies including biochemical and cell biological approaches as well as quantitative proteomics and high-content imaging. Our lab is well embedded in the excellent research infrastructure at SyNergy and the LMU München; we offer access to state-of-the-art technologies, well-equipped laboratories, a vibrant scientific exchange and passionate culture of co-operation.

Conditions

Ideally, candidates should have a first-class Master’s degree in a Life Science-related discipline, a background in proteomics, biochemistry, cell biology or neurobiology and be highly motivated and enthusiastic to join the exciting field of autophagy research.
