The announced PhD position, which is located at the Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, is supervised by Professor Larisa Beilina and partially funded by a grant from the Swedish Research Council.

Job assignments

You will work in a highly dynamic research environment at the interface between mathematics and computational electromagnetics.  Mathematical analysis and computational  experiments will be closely integrated into most of the work.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of an adaptive finite element method in parallel infrastructure for the solution of the direct and Coefficient Inverse Problems (CIPs) for time-dependent Maxwell equations in C++/PETSc.  The main focus in the project will be on the development of new versions of domain decomposition finite element/finite difference methods implemented in the existing software package WavES ( for the specific problem of this project.

 The project will offer you training in a wide range of front-line computational  methods for solution of electromagnetic coefficient inverse problems. Together with the course programme at the research school in applied mathematics this training will prepare you for a range of academic as well private and public sector carrier opportunities. Postgraduate education consists in four years of full-time studies and leads to a PhD.

 The total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time postgraduate education and may be extended after institutional service by a maximum of 20% in accordance with HF 5, section 5, section 7, doctoral student employment.


Applicants for the position should  hold a Master degree  in  Computer Science, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent, awarded by an internationally recognized university-level institution, or hold  a 4-year bachelor's degree, or expect to complete that degree by the start of the employment.

The candidate should be familiar with the theory and applications of numerical analysis and mathematical physics, PDEs. It is preferable if the candidate will have experience in object-oriented programming in C++/PETSc using MPI.

Candidates should have excellent communication skills, strong self-organizing skills and ability to work within an interdisciplinary setting. Fluency in English is expected.
