Working at the Charité

The Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin in the heart of Berlin is one of the largest and most research-intensive medical faculties in Europe. In our synthetic metabolism group, bacterial platform strains are developed to generate sustainable processes for the bioeconomy and to engineer catalytic functions in vivo. This involves the rewiring of metabolism to develop versatile metabolite sensor strains. This advanced technology allows us to:

  • Develop enzymes by in vivo engineering
  • Enable growth-coupled bioproduction from a variety of sustainable carbon sources
  • Establish C1 substrate utilization like formate, methanol and CO2 as sustainable feed stocks

Job Overview

We are looking for a PhD student for the project "BioLignoPlast", a Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funded project. The project was funded in the framework of bioeconomy international and involves research groups from Marburg (Germany) and Brisbane (Australia).
The main tasks of the project are:

  • Engineering of platform sensor strains that can be used for selecting a large and relevant enzyme class
  • Characterization and optimization of engineered metabolite sensor strains
  • Proof of concept of in vivo selecting industrially relevant enzymes
  • In vivo engineering of enzymes with so far limiting activity to enhanced bioproduction
  • Work independently in a laboratory setting, including planning and conducting experiments
  • Work effectively in a large, multidisciplinary team of engineers, chemists, and biologists
  • Apply metabolic engineering methods (deletions, overexpression, genome editing, adaptive laboratory evolution)
  • Communicate scientific results effectively, both in written and oral formats
  • Author peer-reviewed publications

They are academically active: According to §110 (4), sentence 3, the BerlHG provides academic staff with an appropriate amount of time within their working hours for their own further academic qualification

We are looking for

  • Master degree in related natural sciences
  • Experience in working with microorgansisms
  • Experience in metabolic engineering, ideally pathway engineering, or enzyme engineering, or strain development
  • A profound understanding of the central metabolic reactions, biochemical processes and molecular mechanisms is of great importance

Advantages at the Charité

  • A highly professional collaboration within a motivated and interdisciplinary team
  • A future-oriented, varied and challenging job with high levels of personal responsibility and personal freedom of action
  • Inter-cultural team events, well-structured onboarding with friendly colleagues
  • Extensive free continuing education and training opportunities up to and including university studies
  • Discounts on various offerings for employees, for example shopping, travel, sports
  • Charité has been certified as a family-friendly university and family-friendly company since 2007
